105.5 translator in Millington is being sold to the owners of WVIM.

$35,000 for a translator that covers a bunch of trees and small parts of 5 little roads.
The 60dBu contour doesn't cover Millington or any part of any city.

I've never been able to catch that translator since it was supposedly on on any trips to Memphis. But then I haven't been in Millington in recent years because of coming in on I 40 from Jackson most of the time. Is it even on now?

I asked this question earlier in one of the 1180 threads, but I thought I'd read that EMF also sold one of the other Memphis K-LOVE translators (96.7?) to Pollock in the deal for 1180. Is anything being done with that?

I really won't be surprised to hear that the other translator on 97.7 is being sold eventually as well. When all these translators were applied for K-LOVE was on 94.9 in Byhalia and Ripley, TN. But with the change to 90.7 in Dyersburg and the move of 94.9 to Memphis they aren't needed now. EMF should have used all the Memphis area translators for Air 1 instead, and that also includes the translator on 91.5 in Covington.

Well, maybe, but there would be -- as we say in Mississippi -- "a hitch in the get-along."

Translators outside the "Reserved Band," those on 92.1 and above, must be fed by another FM signal (which, may be another translator). They may NOT be fed programming by a satellite, for instance. That means for Air1 to be put up on 97.7, et. al., EMF would need a primary station locally to translate. Interestingly, with the new AM translator rules, they might have used 1180 for that, but chose not to.

Wouldn't at least the Millington and Covington translators be able to retransmit Air 1 from KJBR 93.7?

Legally speaking, yes. Practically speaking? No.

Here in Memphis, 93.7 is mostly Oxford (never mind splash from first adjacent 93.5/Covington, which you will be pointing at with your receiver antenna). Sure, you might be able to get a highly-directional yagi and try, but it would be far from reliable. And, there's ZERO chance of getting an adequate signal from Covington on 91.5 here in Memphis.

> How far into Memphis can they move 105.5 before it conflicts with WNTM Water Valley or another allocation?

Water Valley isn't the problem. WGKX is.

According to the translator licensee's own paperwork, there is some overlap with 105.9 at the current translator site. But, that overlap is small and is in an essentially unpopulated area. Moving the signal closer-in would be problematic in that there would be more overlap, and it would cover a populated area.

There is a reason that translator is in the middle of nowhere, it seems.
