106.3 translator up and running. Iheart country road on for now

Actually the signal is quite strong from the car radio as well as in the office buildings of midtown Manhattan. A bit more problematic at street level but definitely listenable. I was suprised however that it came in clearer in northern Brooklyn than in midtown at street level but that's primarily because of the buildings just as happens with any other NYC fm. Walk by the ESB and you can't hear a thing. Most stations are distorted on the average hd walkman.
If there was any slight trace of WKMK in northern Brooklyn or lower Manhattan it is completely gone now.
 
That's the risk of low power transmitters on tall buildings such as ESB and stations with high power also from there. The signal goes over it instead of the ground.

It's really hard to cover Manhattan with a low power signal. If it's too high, the signal will go over everyone. If it's too low, the signal won't make it past a few blocks because the buildings will absorb it. There's a 102.3 pirate in uptown Manhattan that doesn't go far, but it's strong for a few blocks, which is probably a transmitter inside an apartment. 87.7 broadcasts from the Citicorp building which is lower than most of the skyscrapers in Manhattan, so there was a lot of multipath, but at 3000 watts, it was powerful enough to penetrate buildings.

Just wait till Saturday night when almost all the pirates will be broadcasting. Try listening to 106.3 in the outer boroughs. It'll be a mess.
 
I just drove out to Long Island and was able to get it to the Queens/Nassau border then it faded rather quickly. It even beat out the pirates throughout Queens, at least tonight.
 
I leave in North Queens near the Whitestone Bridge. Last night at about 10 PM I was able to pick up the Clear Channel station at 106.3 on a table radio. When I tuned in 106.3 on a personal stereo, I received the pirate. This morning near my house in a car radio 106.3 came in loud and clear, but in eastern Queens it was weak. The new starting date is May 18. I don't understand why Clear Channel is making such a big deal when 106.3 has such a short range and so few people have HD radios. Why did they have to yank country from 106.7 HD2 and stunt for 3 weeks?

What is the real benefit to Clear Channel by putting up a 99 watt signal format on a translator anyway? Reading all the posts, it seems reception is marginal in various areas at best.
 
The Sunday 5/8/11 Mother's Day format wheel stops on what can best be described as "Classic Lite", the original format that aired on 106.7 HD2 when the channel started up in the mid 2000s. Uses liners such as "sit back & relax" and "a station just for you" and "a station that plays songs you haven't heard on the radio in years". Age range of the Soft AC music is from about 1969 to the late 1990s. Unlike the national formats that have played recently, this one is custom made for Lite FM...which might lead one to believe that this could possibly be the permanent format for the 106.7 HD2/W292DV (106.3 FM translator) signals. Maybe to augment the main "Lite FM" channel and see if it could be similar to the successful, similarly formatted WFEZ Miami. Pure speculation; who knows?

To listen online it's a bit tricky, since the online station link is not available on the www.iheartradio.com site but is available through a link on the www.iheartradio.com media player. So here goes:

Go to http://www.1067litefm.com/mediaplayer/ - then "mouse over" the phrase "750+ Stations" in the upper right corner.
The iheartradio station selection screen should open.
Where it says "OR - All Cities", use the arrow and drop-down box to select "NY".
Where it says "Format - Featured", use the arrow and drop-down box to select "All".
In the lower left corner where it says "Page 1/10", use the forward-facing arrow to page ahead to Page 10.
On Page 10, there should be 2 listings for "Station - (Blank)", "Location - New York, NY" and "Format - N/A".
The first unnamed station is in actuality WKTU-FM-103.5 New York.
The second unnamed station is in actuality WLTW HD2/W292DV (106.3 FM translator). Click on the second listed station to listen live.

Note: after selecting "NY" and "All", the media player may display the stations in a random order, meaning that the "unnamed" stations may not appear on Page 10. (One time WLTW HD2 appeared on Page 9.) Since there are only 2 of them within the 10-page range, just select/click one of the two of them until you hear WLTW HD2.

I'm not sure if this unnamed choice has been available for awhile and has been changing along with what's been going out over the air or if it's (most likely) been playing just this particular "Classic Lite" format either recently or maybe longer, such as when there used to be a "Classic Lite" link available on the webpage http://www.1067litefm.com/cc-common/hdradio/.

On the HD Radio page mentioned above, access is available to "New York Country" (or maybe now just "Country Road"), the former format of 106.7 HD2:

Well, if CBS-FM and WKTU can make a comeback in New York... why not an HD-2 channel? And now, thanks to the magic of translators, people could actually hear the station this time around! :D

PJC: Are you sure that's not the original link from their first go-round as "Classic Lite"?
 
Doubt that there's one on the iheartradio phone app as it's a fairly anonymous link even on the iheartradio.com player. There are quite a few of the smaller & fringe stations in the Clear Channel family that aren't on the phone app. Some of them stream via the online media player only & some of them don't stream at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the former "Classic Lite" media player stream link. I hadn't had occasion to look at the New York, NY stable of stations on the player in awhile...so it would have been easy to miss the unlabeled stations on the master list. Or perhaps it's just been recently revived from dormancy for this instance...we'll see if it lasts.

Yes, if you dig deep, you can find good stuff. Wish I had these (see link below) back in 2007 when they were originally posted and active...looks like they're all outdated now...they just lead to the home page for www.iheartradio.com.

The Monday 5/9/11 format of the day is "Country Road Top 20". A good portion of the streams on the www.iheartradio.com player are not available as of this writing, including "Country Road Top 20" & the "Classic Lite" stream that was available Sunday 5/8/11. We'll check as the day goes on & see if they reappear.

This stream link (from Sunday 5/8/11) is for WLTW HD2/106.3 FM (translator) - it streams whatever is being heard over the air and is not dedicated to any particular format, such as "Classic Lite" that played/streamed on Sunday 5/8/11 or "Country Road Top 20" that played/streamed on Monday 5/9/11:

The Tuesday 5/10/11 format wheel gets stuck on..."Big Classic Hits-Feel Good Songs Of The 70s And 80s".
The daily transition from one format to the next seems to occur around 3am Eastern Time.

It appears that this New York stream will play whatever is heard on-air in New York, regardless of format - and will drop in New York specific liners/station IDs over the ones used on the national feed and will eliminate most/all of the DJ announcements/liners/station IDs used on the national feed.

All of the internet streams are ahead of the on-air broadcast by approximately 45-50 seconds (your timing may vary).
 
Many formats passed by these days but still the expected format 'smoothjazz' not yet. So this is a sign maybe.
On NewYorkSmoothJazz.com and NewYorkSmooth.com still no action yet.
