106.7 OLDIES FOR EVERYBODY, A NEW KIND OF OLDIES STATION

They just played BORN TO BE ALIVE by Patrick Hernandez, a Disco classic from the late 70's. They have been playing a lot of Rhythmic Adult Contemporary songs of late, even though that format is
all but toast. But, Atlanta was one of the few places that never had a post Power 99 Rhythmic AC
station. Power 99 seemed to "burn all the possible bridges" for such a Rhythmic format when they became Alternative.

Even B-98 doesn't play BORN TO BE ALIVE. I keep telling you all this is a new kind of oldies station. Not your typical one, but more INCLUSIVE. 106.7 is also the closest Motown oldies type station Atlanta has ever had. They are all over the map with their music unlike any other in this city. Their new format hasn't really caught fire yet, but just you wait and see what happens.

This station just took a terrible turn. I guess it's not hard to justify 80's tunes being oldies, but it sounds awful mixed in with the past three decades (at least on a radio station that was playing really good, deeper Top 40 cuts).

I think it sounds great.......much like you're listening to your iPod.......all kinds of music.
We'll have to see how it goes in the next ratings, but I think it will do better.

Personally I'd like to see the station do well, but I agree it was much better as True Oldies and fun to listen too. The music is all over the place and it might work for someone's ipod but not for commercial radio. It needs to be better focused. This weekend was a Super 60's Weekend on The True Oldies Channel and it would be nice to have it back on 106.7

OK.  Just asking--how many of you griping about their playlist fall into each of the following buckets:

1) I'm a baby boomer and I miss the music of my youth.

2) I'm a GenXer and I happen to like 60s oldies, but there's no good place in ATL terrestrial radio left to listen to them.

3) I like the new music mix, but the playlist just needs some proper segue planning to avoid the "train wrecks".

4) I just hate 80s music.

5) I like 80s music, but it just doesn't mix well with 70s AM gold and never will.

6) 80s?  That's B98.5's job and we don't need another 80s station (I'll just go ahead and mark down Caller10 here).  I should add that the NEW 97.1 The River and Rock100.5 also play their share of 80s.

106.7 could have gone one of three traditional routes. #1 “oldies” (True Oldies Channel) has demographic issues with too many listeners over 50. #2 typical late 70’s & 80’s Classic Rock and go up against a 97.1 which has a better signal and is established. #3 Gold 80’s “Pop” which would get into 98.5’s space. I guess they are trying something a little different out of necessity. I like it and hope they do well.

IMHO just a little music research on what songs not to play and they could be a in force in Atlanta Radio.

jabba, I actually love 80's music. I mean, it's probably my favorite decade overall. I'm a nut for new wave and alternative bands from that time period. As much as I love those years, there was some wretched Top 40 music released in the early 80's and I've heard a few of those songs mixed in with some pretty damn good 60's/70's material. Face it, the stuff that rose to the top of the pop charts in the 60's slays what was in the charts in 1981. I know there are examples that prove me wrong, but hearing Smokey Robinson sing "Being With You" vs. his Motown work is a little depressing. I don't listen to radio that much. My iPod works just fine with it's bizarre shuffle mix going from Dead Kennedys to Bee Gees to New Order to Rolling Stones to Arcade Fire to Carpenters. I'm not afraid of a weird mix. Just would rather hear a traditional oldies format. I was happily surprised when 106 would play something I never heard before, but I'm probably not the typical target.

Here's the HUGE VARIETY the "new station to listen to while at work" is playing today.
This is what Top-40 used to sound like........everything for everybody. However, they
seem to have left the slower (put Granny to sleep) songs to B-98 and are going for a
more upbeat sound.

Evil Woman- E.L.O. 1975
Bad Bad Leroy Brown- Jim Croce 1973
All She Wants To Do Is Dance- Don Henley 1984
The Boys Are Back In Town- Tin Lizzy 1976
Show And Tell- Al Wilson 1974
More Than A Woman- Bee Gees 1977
Dancin' In The Streets- Martha & The Vandellas 1964
Band Of Gold- Freda Payne 1970
The Smoke Of A Distant Fire- Sanford-Townsend Band 1976
1999- Prince 1982
All Right Now- Free 1970
Touch Me In The Morning- Diana Ross 1973

Why in hell would anyone want to hear "Born To Be Alive" again?

I love it now because it sounds exactly like AM Top 40 of the 70's and early 80's without the am static. If it was a hit at the time it was played whether rock, country, or R&B sounding. I'm guessing I'm probably their target demo - female 35-54.

I agree, now if they would use jingles instead of imaging and let the jock SELL the liners, romance the music, and add relevant content, they might just have something. Also, get in the street, go where the audience goes, do what the audience does, and put the audience on the air. But, that's all too simple and besides after Clueless genius Jeffries gets his hands on it, it's will be downhill.

Styx "Best Of Times" and "Babe" both on today during the whopping 6 minutes I listened in the car. Dang. "Just The Two Of Us" yesterday. This station took an awful turn.

They really should take notes from the New K-Hits 104-3 Chicago. Oldies is a dead term, just like this radio station. And I can not believe Randy and Spiff are STILL on the air in Atlanta! WoW!

I think 106.7 is right on the mark 80% of the time. We'll have to see how they do in the
next ratings...........anything other than an up would not be a good sign.

To me the stations are just about the same.
