i thought 101.five sounded best when it was aaa
re 'chill'..
i had the same problem trying to get alternative on the air.
back in '87 '88 '89, i'd got the same response that i'm getting with 'chill'... "the edge won't work" "it's a fad"
There's an audience for it, but is the audience substantial enough to make it worth turning on the transmitter
guy zapoleon, doug roberts & bob case had the future vision to put 'the edge' on 104.7 overnight
later, steven taslitz had the future vision to put 'the edge' 24/7 on 106.3 with the jacobs bros
for a fad of a station, with music that no one wants to hear, i think 'the edge' has had a pretty good run.
since alternative & hip hop 20 years ago, there really hasn't been any new music formats introduced to boring fm radio.
there may be new formats mixing old music, but no new music formats.
dance radio was told that it's a niche format and it should keep a tight & narrow playlist.. which is why few people listen to radio these days.
last week i tuned-in to energy four times to hear what they're up to.. and every time, i heard the same 'rehab' song' that's probably on every other station in town with a rock, hip hop, mainstream, alternative or country version of the song.
energy should own the format with nothing crossing over and open-up their playlist to include techno, trance, jungle, drum & bass, downtempo, trip hop, acid jazz & the like. ..energy should stay in the mix and spin everything.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/dance/ is proper dance radio
what do i care ? ..i've got my ipod & internet.
i can honestly say that my friends & family don't listen to the radio, except for news / talk.
now with advertisting moving away from tv & radio, i hope to hear more indie radio in the future.
it's just funny to see y'all holding on to your formatic beliefs that music should be 'familiar', tested, researched, tested, research and played in super-tight rotation. ..which is fine if you're only going to listen to the radio for an hour a day. ..and that's what happening; people listening to the radio less.
whatever.
