Hello, 106.9 programmers, did you know that there were several African American artists that had pop hits in the 1980s? you might want to check into that because I don't hear anything from them on your station.... I am not suggesting that you play hardcore rap or NWA, but gee, you could play "safe--non edgy" stuff like the theme from Ghostbusters or Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me" or "Let's Hear it for the Boy" or Janet and Michael Jackson's 1980s mega hits. I am a white male that is jarred by the paucity of African American artists played on 106.9, when the 1980s were full of hits by African American artists.
I just looked at the top 100 songs played on 106.9 according to Yes.com ( I have no idea how accurate that is) and a quick scan ( I could have missed a few) of the list showed only 1 African American artist in the top 100. Lenny Kravitz at number 67. Certainly the top hits of the 1980s included more than 1% of songs by African American Artists.
Although the top tier of songs on the list does have more Rock flavor to it, there are enough pop songs thoughout to justify the inclusion of more African American artists. Why don't they just play what they played on KRBE and KKBQ 93Q back in the 1980s instead of this sanitized version of 1980s lite?
Also, from the looks of their playlist, more and more 1990s songs are creeping in. If they are still around as the calendar turns to 2010, wil they become the 90s station instead of the 1980s station.
