1090 XEPRS Has Gone Back to Oldies Plus Wolfman - L.A. Daily News

I wish XEPRS could change their call letters back to XERB. That way they might be able to use more of the Wolfman's voice tracks where he could actually mention the station making it could even more realistic.

I was around 7-8 years old when XERB became XEPRS, so I have no remberence of it, means nothing. But XEPRS which blasted into Phoenix where I grew up, now that I know and remember very well.
By "realistic" I meant "more fun". I don't think any of this we're hearing on 1090 is being taken seriously by anybody. I think all of this will be gone in the not to distant future... BTW, I first heard the call letters XERB when spoken by Wolfman Jack on XERB way back when I was in Junior High School. Unfortunately, never heard him on XERF way way back in really ancient times.
Saw this on a Facebook page. Our client Marc's investment in these iconic radio personalities, billboards, a tv campaign and the lease of XEPRS is a bold move during a time when many radio operators aren't taking risks or trying something new. These are the worlds greatest DJs playing the worlds greatest oldies on a 77KW stick that has a signal up the California coast and it's now streaming with a few technical engineering difficulties that will be ironed out over the next few days. I'd say it's not confusing. There's a clear theme. 1090's entire broadcast day is devoted to worship. During Monte Maria hours, they worship God... during the other hours, they worship oldies 😄
But the Spanish Catholic programming used to be 24/7, right? Therefore, does the contract with the religious group specify they get a refund, if another group (like the rich guy paying for the Oldies format) comes along and offers to pay more for different programming in certain hours?
That's really funny. How is playing 60 year old songs with these tapes of old hosts the same as "taking risks" or "trying something new?" If they want to try something new, maybe play some new songs and hire some new hosts. That would be taking a risk. And radio stations are doing that every day.

I listened to the livestream on talentfarm.net, with Wolfman Jack in between Katy Perry and other modern songs and it was odd. I know they have other talent available according to their website, but I haven’t heard them.

77 kw daytime, 50 kw night.
Those extra 27 kw daytime only increase coverage by less than 10% IF conductivity is similar. (To double AM coverage, you have to quadruple the power.)
The useable daytime signal with today's noise levels is mostly San Diego County and coastal Orange and some Coastal LA county daytime. Nights don't matter much now, as there is so little radio listening at night now.
The real issue is that this has limited novelty value. I guess a few listeners will stay with it a long time, but, honestly, how many people want to hear 50-year-old styles of radio and matching music? Most will listen a little bit, and then find it to be quirky, quaint and not of ongoing interest.
If it doesn't increase coverage much, what's the point of having 77k -- beyond bragging rights? 77k is the highest AM power of any Mexican station in/near Tijuana.
Since that station has long wanted to cover as far "up" California as possible, the added power does help. Even if it just adds 10 miles or so to the "listenable signal zone", that can mean millions more people covered.
And with the increase in man-made noise levels, you need more power just to keep coverage the same.
How would you get 77 kW? Push a 75 kW transmitter slightly above spec? (I know there is some leeway; for example, the 50 kW Continental 317C is actually capable of putting out 53 kW.) Or underdrive a 100 kW transmitter?
The XEPRS station is classified as category B, which limits its effective power to 50kw.
In Mexico, there are also limits according to their assigned category, the majority of the "powerful" Mexican AMs are class B, there are few that manage to have class A authorization like the XEW.
In the current concession title, its maximum dominant power is not set, but the B classification is clear, and all this within the technical provision of IFT-001-2015 for AMs.
But the history of the 1090 am tells us that the technical framework is 50kw day and night, it only changes the pattern of its tower from an omnidirectional system during the day to a directional one. Possibly with the mandatory update in 2025, more technical information will be published.

All good info. But... we were discussing XEWW's 77kw. We know XEPRS is 50kw. Also, I believe XEPRS is directional full-time, not just at night.
XEPRS is a Class A station. It shares that status with two other Class A stations on 1090, WBAL Baltimore, owned by Hearst, and KAAY Little Rock, owned by Cumulus. All three stations must protect each other. WBAL is 50,000 watts non-directional by day, but going directional at night using a three-tower array. Same for KAAY currently.
Although I see from Radio-Locator.com that KAAY is thinking about going with only one tower and ending its Class A rank. It would drop power at night to only 80 watts but remain non-directional. I guess it wants to sell the land the other two towers sit on.
