11/19/06 Inquirer Article about WCAU NBC 10 anchor Renee Chenault-Fattah

Renee Chenault-Fattah saids that she intends to stay on WCAU-TV 10 while her husband Chakah Fattah runs for mayor ( http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/local/16050918.htm ). Any Stories about Chakah Fattah and the mayor race will be read by co-anchor Tim Lake. "I'll sit there and do what I do every single day - read the stories in front of me," Chenault-Fattah says. To read the full article: http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/16050923.htm I think that she should have resigned her anchor job weeks or even months ago so she didn't have to worry about a possible conflict of interest with her husband and she can focus on her husband running for mayor and her family. What do you guys think about this?

There would only be a conflict of intrest if they MADE it a conflict of interest. Even better that only Tim will be doing the mayoral stories. As long as she does like she does every night, reads the stories that are rolling in front of her on the teleprompter, there wont be any problem. Now if she shows up wearing a CHAKAH '08 pin, different story.

The Phillyist blog seems to have made a major issue of this:
http://www.phillyist.com/archives/2006/11/20/tv_notes_1.php

I don't think they really like her or the situation, since they say "Even before this, with her husband in the House, Chenault-Fattah’s presence on the air gave the appearance of bias. This is just going to ramp things up a few notches."

I think I have to agree with them. This situation is wrong. They should have fired her when her corrupt husband got elected to congress. We all know what kind of mayor he will be - same crap, different idiot. Plus, Chenault-Fattah is a lousy anchor.

I agree with you 100%.

It's definitely a conflict of interest, given Chaka Fattah's high profile in the community. And those raising this issue are right to do so.

Of course, it's not the first time this sort of thing has happened. ABC News had Cokie Roberts as a Congressional correspondent while her mother was a sitting member.

Truthfully, this probably would be much less of an issue is she never hyphenated her name. Sure people would know they were married, but they wouldn't be reminded of it every time she says her name, hence most folks wouldn't think about it much, let alone get fired up about it.

I don't really care, because I don't watch NBC-10 News, but I did see some of their 11pm cast last night, and let me tell you, it was BAD. I only saw it because I had just finished watching Studio 60 (yes, I'm the one watching), and once the show was over it went right to the news. Neither of my tuners were on Ch. 6 (what I normally watch), so I figured I'd check it out and see what was going on.

The reporter was Harry Hairston, and it was probably the worst "live-shot" I've ever seen. First off, they were calling it "Breaking News", when the fire was already 2 hours old. The flames were nearly out by the time he started his report, and he had nothing to say. He said the same 3 or 4 things over and over again.

I continued to watch (fast forwarding thru some part thanks to TiVo) and was shocked at how bad the cast was. Maybe it was a bad night, but I don't think it was.

Sorry for the tangent, but back to the Renee issue. Ultimately, what does it matter in this city? Whoever wins the Democratic Primary will win the General in '07. Fattah will win because people know his name and they've voted for him before. I really don't think the amount of votes he'll get will be swayed by his wife being an anchorwoman in town.
