1150WAVO Returns Adult Standards To Charlotte

I found another BEAUTIFUL music station transmitting out of Greenville SC, on 94.5. It is a Christian ministry that plays what I grew up with in the 60s-70s. 101 Strings, Mantovani, Disney themes, Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals, a LOT of instrumentals of easy popular tunes from then. It is in competition though with another station, of another culture. I do enjoy what I can hear though....

Oh man,I'd love to know what that station "of another culture" is....

Will this affest oldies 106.1? When will w-avo switch?

I read the Jones Standards will fold into Dial Global's standards format on Sept.30. I don't think this will have any effect on Oldies 106.1.

When I try to listen to the Greenville station, all I hear is Spanish most of the time. La Preciosa is in Greensboro. They call it Spanish Oldies, which is a lot like Regional Mexican.

But I do know how good the Greenville station is. They are Christian a lot of the time, especially weekends, but the music is secular during the day on weekdays. If you don't mind scripture readings and other positive comments (or possibly negative comments if you're not narrow-minded and fundamentalist), they do sound good.

WYFQ 93.5 FM and 930 AM do the same thing musically part-time, except they're all Christian.

Getting back to the original topic, I drove to Charlotte to UNCC (interesting new entrance, but the newest buidings still aren't finished). It made me feel so much better after 5 as traffic moved at a snail's pace. And when I got out of range (though most people wouldn't have put up with as much static as I did; my radio has poor AM reception and the accelerator will mess it up), I couldn't believe how bad all the other stations sounded. Charlotte is just a musical wasteland other than WAVO.

Chuck Southcott was morning DJ. Quite a few of the songs were oldies rather than standards, but no AC. I even heard "Traces" by Classics IV. Now I hope I don't hear "Stormy". On the other hand, Dial Global was doing so well Friday and they went and played "Spooky". That's on my list of songs they should get rid of.

Besdies, the ARS version is so much better. At least the keyboard solo and jazz guitar solo. I don't care for the rock guitar solo. And it's too long for most formats.

Forgot one detail.

I was reading about how the sales staff is at fault if a station can't make it.

That must have come from the person whose fault it really was.

Anyway, WAVO is trying to make money by having people sponsor a day of programming. An NPR station I listen to does this. They get to hear their names on the air every so often and the "Happy Anniversary" or "Happy Birthday" greeting to whoever. On WAVO that's $50 a day.
