12 News Passes Off Staff Photo as Citizen Jounalist

Honestly, I couldn't believe my ears when Brahm Resnick introduced a "citizen journalist" photo. It was by that same Paula C., the green weather producer. who did the weather on the last Friday night of the Olympics. Since when is a staff member's photo labelled as a "citizen journalist". C'mon 12 News, have you lost ALL your journalistic standards??? ::)

I gave up watching 12 long, long ago but, in all honesty, none of the Valley's news shows impress me. They have become platforms to air as many local adverts as possible while giving "news" airtime to other network offerings and/or time-fillers like multiple weather segments only minutes apart (yes KPHO, that was directed at your noon news). And 10 wins the "most malfunctions" award.

For 12 to brand itself "12 News" (especially with that irritating nasely image guy) is ludicrous.

You mean the voiceover for everything at 12, landtuna?

He's been around there since 1983. Yes, 1983. When 12's opens had Hello News in them and had that cheesy typewriter effect.

I agree, the Valley needs a news shakeup.

Senor Tuna, say it ain't so! That's Charlie Van Dyke, an image voice legend,
longtime DJ/PD, and a local. KLIF, KHJ, 'LS, CKLW, KRTH, KLUV...the hits just
keep on comin'!

Wonder why KOOL-FM has never used him? (No offense, NFVG. :))

I'm not a huge follower of voice artists but did know that CVD was the "12 News" voice. I've heard other spots he's done and he doesn't seem to have that "pinched nose" nasal sound on those. Just something that "gwates me the wong way" as Elmer Fudd would say. Unlike most of you on the board I am not in the biz so probably don't have the same appreciation for voice artists. No offense to CVD but I think NFVG is the winner here but that's mostly on content. ;D

Since Paula C is not a photojournalist or camera operator for 12 NEWS, I see nothing wrong with her submitting a photo that is used on the air. KTVK does it all the time, April has shown weather photos submitted by her husband and parents, I seem to remember Royal's wife sending in a shot or two and there have been photos submitted by photojournalist who were "not on the clock". I would not be surprised to see it also occur at 5, 10 and 15.

Isn't that something like yellow journalism? You know, making it up or announcing the news with your own special little additives that are not necessarily so.

Let's be clear here. If a legitimate news organization is asked for "citizen journalist" photos, then they should be citizen journalist photos. Paid staff members (even on their own time) are NOT "citizen journalists", they are professional journalists and should be labeled accordingly. I am simply quoting accepted journalistic standards, which apparently Phoenix stations no longer have (if 3, 5, 10, 12, and 15 have done it).

def. Journalism that exploits, distorts, or exaggerates the news to create sensations and attract readers.

Presenting a photo taken by an identified staff member doesn't fall into the definition even though "citizen journalist" would seem to mean a non-professional (which is what some spouses and/or relatives of on-air journalists could be).

I don't think any deception was intended. They did identify the contributor correctly, right?

There's no deceit at all then. The Valley's news seems quite non-professional at times.

I saw a photo by "Joe Anaya" last night on CBS 5 News. Is that Catherine's husband???

So, local journalists are now asking spouses to go out and photograph the weather!?! Does the news director give them extra brownie points for doing this? Maybe Catherine took the picture herself and had her husband send it in?

Another new low in Valley television news!

IIRC, Joe Anaya has been in Phoenix media for quite a few years--
well before Catherine's arrival here.

His name rings a bell as being on the KT'R 620 news staff at one time,
maybe he's also at channel 5 now.

Would the readers on this board agree that when it comes to TV news in the valley... This market has waaaay too many people making more than what they are worth, for not doing all that much?

My feeling is that we put up with a lot of sub-standard "crap" passing as news. Seattle is a similar-sized market and has real journalists who report on real news. Where is the 12 News of the 90's, with experienced reporters reporting on real news? Instead, we get "2 different people, one great newsteam" drivel that insults your intelligence.
