1440 AM Greenville was ESPN now Fox Sports

I turned on 1440 this morning expecting to hear Colin Cowherd and at first thought he was off and had a substitute host. Nope. It's now Fox Sports. I didn't see that coming.

I know ESPN radio is gone from Columbia - so now none in Greenville too?
Yes, it's still on in Spartanburg on 1400AM but that's a fringe station for me.

1440 is a Clear Channel station and I'm wondering if this is a mass exit by Clear Channel sports stations or not. I read something about Cumulus' Sports Stations bolting ESPN but I'm not sure if this is widespread among Clear Channel stations.

Cumulus is dropping ESPN and FOX for CBS since they have a deal with them.

I am really surprised that ESPN is not working 92.1 really hard in Columbia. With the Panthers and ESPN on a Class C, they should reallly making a killing in the male money demos, even being the 3rd sports station in town. ESPN is a superior product to Fox Sports.

ESPN isn't helping itself at all. The combination of new alternatives, NBC and CBS, along with forcing rights fees and major clearance requirements on all of the affiliates is why you're seeing more stations drop the "Worldwide Leader"

I understand. I'm not defending heavy-handed tactics if indeed they are but there are alternatives for listeners too. I've been listening to ESPN Radio on my phone app all day.

On the 1330 thread, the most feasible reason for 1440 dropping ESPN was mentioned - it wasn't doing well enough (making enough money) for CC to keep shelling out $$ for it. FOX Sports Radio is Premiere so it is probably much lower cost and easier for them to carry.

I forget about NBC Sports Radio. There haven't been any big announcements for it really. I think CBS and ESPN will be the big leaders now with NBC, FOX Sports, and especially Y! getting leftover affiliates. FOX Sports Radio has the best advantage of those 3 because of Clear Channel having a sizable amount of AM signals to clear it on.

I'm wondering if 1330 and 950 ARE going CBS Sports Radio. Seems like they would've switched today.

I thought they would do this when the Talk station went on 106.3 FM and they didn't do it. Now that they are up against a larger FM station, 94.5FM, don't you think they might want to keep the two AM's? I believe they do fill in the holes somewhat don't they?

A lot of people are mad about Cumulus flipping their ESPNs to CBS. Their Savannah sports station probably had 35 Facebook comments, almost all against the new CBS programming.

Myrtle Beach got probably 50 comments, most against. People are just used to the ESPN programming since it has been on for so many years.

[/quote]I see it the other way around, the FM as filling the holes of the AM's. This isn't like WSB in Atlanta adding an FM (where the AM definitely covers areas the FM can't). I can't imagine that enough people would still be listening to them on 1330/950 to cause a negative reaction.

The only area I can think the AM's come in better than the FM is maybe Pickens County where 106.3 can get a little shaky. Overall, from my listening experience with 106.3, I think they have a good signal across the important parts of the market. Now that they finally put it in mono, it's probably better.

I think it's more than that. I think ESPN really is better. It would be just like the bean counters to think that sports talk is sports talk and that people will listen to whatever cheap product they put on. That might have been true once.

I caught Mike and Mike on ESPN's cable TV channel this morning. When I left the house I switched to the ESPN app. The radio show is so integrated with the cable channel and the ESPN website, that when you use them the way I do, it's tough to switch radio shows.

Same thing going on in Columbia. 560 AM there had Yahoo!, now has changed networks to Fox Sports. SportsTalk SC is not airing on AM anymore in Columbia. Just on WVOC's 100.1 frequency. That's after 107.5 picked up CBS, changing from Fox.

espn is heavy handed. they have the brand and they are going to make you pay for it. am stations that are the heart of sports talk are going elsewhere dan patrick is a former espn host who went elsewhere. i wonder how long it will take other hosts to figure out audience pays more than recognition. fox sports on radio sucks right now, but they have to start somewhere. many laughed as fox tv signed on as a network. no one laughing now.

Fox Sports Radio has been around since 2000 and hasn't made a ton of progress. I don't think it's going to see the TV network's level of success.

1440 is not leased out. Clear Channel operates it. They just haven't created a website for it yet. As ESPN 1440 it had the typical CC template.

I agree with almost all of the previous comments.
Fox Sports Radio is terrible, and ESPN is certainly demanding, but you would think the "ESPN brand" alone should be worth something in a market like Columbia. When you factor in the proximity of big time NASCAR, PGA, and NFL (if the Panthers count as NFL) along with the existing major NCAA players - you realize that Columbia has the potential to be a major "sports" market if not a "major market"

Then again, if you wanna cover Augusta, Darlington, and Charlotte - you probably got to pay someone.
We all know the chances of that happening

This is a tough break for sports radio fans in GSP. Dan Patrick is good, but the Fox hosts like Jay Mohr and others are pretty much unlistenable. My buddies and I miss Cowherd and Van Pelt. Bottom line: another in a series of bonehead moves by Clear Channel Greenville. Who's running that operation?

Don't really listen to sports radio, but one thing I was curious about is whether this means that games from Fox Sports South will be simulcast on the station. Other than what's already been said about talk, that's the only thing I could see as a potential benefit with having a regional focus.

I don't know about the Fox Sports South games, but I actually listened to FSR for a little while today and what I heard is pretty bad. ESPN IS much better, as is the new CBS format.

I wish Clear Channel would have put ESPN on 96.7 along with the 'Cocks. Of course they didn't see any need to pay for it - it was on a band that's pretty much dead to the average listener in this market and got no promotion.
