1480 WHBC Canton to news/talk soon....WHY?

As many of us already know, heritage full-service/music/sports WHBC 1480
in Canton is going news/talk April 2nd (or so).

In the current morning show promo...the last few words say "news/talk 1480 WHBC".

The puzzling thing is....WHY change formats? It's not like going talk is going draw
a ton of new listeners under age 40.

Most AMs today are heavily age 50+. And, WHBC 1480 already owns age 50+ in
Canton. OWNS it.

Surely the deep thinkers at Next Media don't feel a news/talk format will pull FM-type
younger and middle-age demos on am AM radio station?

Is it me??? Am I missing something?

Comments please.

It's going to depend what they put on the news/talk format. All of the top tier syndicated shows are taken, so that could be a problem.

Well, there's Dennis Miller (noon-3pm), Jim Bohannon (overnights), the audio of "Larry King Live" (midnight) and Fox Sports Radio (evenings and weekends). Note that WHBC is one of the first stations to carry Dennis' new WW1 show (which debuts on Monday).

Local talent? Well, Fred and Pat stay on mornings, community activist Ron Ponder in mid-mornings, and former WHBC-F host Brady Russell is in afternoons. It all starts Monday.

Good luck WHBC... you'll need it.

WHBC owning the 50+ crowd is absolutely right! Who's bright idea was it to replace Paul Harvey with that snarky prick, Dennis MIller? I'll tune into Pam and Fred in the am, and then it's off to another station. Is Rush scheduled also? Didn't you folks pay attention to the last election? Who wants to hear that nonsense from the Right or the Left? Stupid move!

Ok, I did a little research. Dennis Miller and Jim Bohannon - both Right Wing conservatives; thankfully there is no Rush Limbaugh on the schedule. Can someone tell me if Westwood One (Jim's producer) owns WHBC or if it is the same media corp. that worked so hard to destroy the Dixie Chicks? What happened to the DJ's? Were they canned, or are they still employed there? Here I am ranting like Miller, but I'll just say I won't come back to 1480 until WHBC plants itself in the middle.

No, Westwood One does not own WHBC. It's owned by NextMedia which had nothing to do with any so-called "destruction" of the Dixie Chicks (which is all a falsehood, anyway).

The DJs were let go, or moved to other jobs inside the NextMedia-Canton operations. In fact, as part of this whole thing, one of the WHBC-FM jocks was BROUGHT BACK for PM drive.

And the only thing really right-wing about Miller is foreign policy. He's still pretty socially permissive.
