Great vid kd8hho!

And Clubber, when you post lies, people will talk. Quit lying, and people will quit talking.

Actually kd8hho, that has to the be one of the coolest videos I've seen. That took time, knowledge, money and some serious planning. They just didn't just get that idea on night and pull off within a couple of hours. Somebody knew what they were doing. And they still don't know who did, that's the best part.

Awesome video. Thanks for sharing that!

Is it most likely they just interrupted a studio link?

Yeah, they overrode the microwave signal to the WGN and WTTW transmitters. From what I read online today WGN at the time had an alternate microwave signal in place, and went to that frequency to boot ol Max off the air, but WTTS did not at the time have that, so the whole 90 seconds of this very strange video aired, including audio. Again, somebody had to spend some money to do that. There is a lot of theories as to who did it. It was even rumored to be someone in the business that did it to posses that type of technical skill. There are a few other videos on the incident on Youtube, including newscasts the following nights on Chicago TV. I knew nothing of this until today, and found it very cool indeed. ;D Thanks again kd8hho for sharing. It made my Tuesday!

yea thats all they did was override the studio link.

this i guess is how people trolled people before the internet lol.

but despite the cost, im really amazed this didnt happen more often

Re: 2 new stations in,, or around martinsville, 93.7 Nostalgia, and 91.5 WTTS T

This happened in Dayton OH to a radio station (WGTZ Fly 92.9) where someone overrode the STL with a loop of muddy audioed music. Lasted quite awhile.

It's not all that difficult to do *if* you have the equipment. That's a big if though.

You just tune the transmitter to the link receive frequency, aim your transmit antenna at the receive point, & hit the switch. You do need to know you've got more effective radiated power than the "right" link transmitter. (or are significantly closer to the receive point) A bigger antenna would probably take care of that. The link frequencies are in the FCC WTB database, though you might have to be in the industry to know for sure which link frequency is which. (taking over the link from a remote receive site back to the station isn't much fun...)

I strongly suspect it was an engineer at one of the stations, simply because they'd be the people most likely to have access to the necessary equipment. Quite possibly in a live truck.

You mean the parts can't be bought at Radio Shack? Didn't they sell the "Science Fair 'You Can Be A Broadcaster' Home Television Microwave Kit" ;D

But seriously.

Louisville had an infamous signal hijacking on radio. WAKY PD Johnny Randolph found WKLO's eq'ed line to the transmitter so he attached a cassette player loaded with WAKY jingles and let it play. What made this epic was the site engineer was on the phone for a long conversation so the studio couldn't contact him to get this off the air.

Maybe not an electronic genius? Just motivation. At the time, Kmart was selling
Rabbit Video senders on 900 MHz. A little modification and amplification plus a
hotel room near Ch 11 and 9's trans would have done it. So, it doesn't take a
brain child to be a pirate, just motivation.

This was a pants down pirate.

Once the statute of limitation passed he brags about it proudly.

Remember Captain Midnight from Florida. He hijacked HBO in the 1980's. The FCC wanted his
a$$ and might have never got him. EXCEPT he was bragging on a pay phone about his pirate
crime.

He ignored the little old lady behind him and continued hogging the phone bragging. The lady
was so mad when she finally got the phone that she called the FBI who called the FCC.

Moral of the story, be nice to little old ladies.

Be nice to little old ladies AND don't brag about hijacking HBO, or any other acts of pirate broadcasting. That has to be part of the reason those guys in Chicago didn't get caught, they kept their mouths shut. Kudos to them ;D

Once upon a time, there was a pirate TV station called Moon TV. They couldn't promise
you the world. But, they gave you the moon. The FCC said he would be spanked. From
the video, I see, he was indeed spanked.

Wasn't this the real inspiration for pirates? http://www.hulu.com/watch/170086/green-acres-how-to-succeed-on-tv-without-really I love it when Mr Haney and the FCC show up at the same time. Mr Haney presents Mr Douglas
fresh shorts for his undressing show.
