2 Stews to PM drive (Atlanta sports radio mediocre to mush)

Well the announcement is done and Atlanta's gonna get more of 2 Live Stews in a more high profile time slot.

As per the AJC story today it is a done deal.

Not impressed.

In fact I would consider Atlanta to have maybe the worst collection of sports radio personnel in the entire country and that includes 680 as well.

I am blown away that this show (Stews) has done as well as it apparently has and I'll predict right now that they will actually drop in overall numbers with this new time they're going to.

They'll be like the backup quarterback who looks good in small samples but is exposed once the job is handed to him on a full time basis.

I'm amazed really.

Atlanta must have very low expectations for sports radio with the popularity of this soul brother, smack talking, props giving, pair of alleged aces to keep the audience amused and informed.

When one considers that this duo is considered to be Atlanta best talk tandem, it truly reflects the obvious lack of sports related talk talent in this very average sports passionless town.

You're kidding right??

Just because you don't understand something, does not mean that it is garbage.
Also, the Stews are very ground breaking and interesting. You must have missed their spread in Sports Illustrated talking about the nations best sports radio programs!
Also, the Stews are not the top sports talk tandem in Atlanta...YET.
Buck and Kincade have been in drive time for almost five years and this is the 5th show from 790 they will be up against. This will finally be the nail in the coffin for 680. The Stews will dominate Buck and Kincade, after many failed attempts by the other 790 shows. This is the kind of creative approach needed to finally defeat Buck and Kincade.
When assessing local sports talk personnel you may be right. The Stews are getting a lot of pub and Kincade is the only Atlanta sports talk personality appearing nationally on ESPN Radio or any other national network.

Yes they have some talent, yes they have accrued a following since they have been doing the show but NO, they will not beat Buck & Kincade in afternoons. Of this I am more certain than anything else. While I can appreciate what they have accomplished I actually agree with Jeffco about how they'll be somewhat exposed in this new time slot. They are much more suited to another day part than PM drive and I don't believe that the same audience they've attracted previously will translate itself into those same high numbers in this new time. Also I thought the story in SI was a complete puff piece and designed to make these two guys look much better than they are in reality. I would consider them a passing fad more than a permanant staple of any sort in Atlanta. Like it or not many won't listen to them for reasons that I'll allow others to squabble over...you do know what I'm talking about right? Its rude and its possibly wrong, "But it be the truth" as the Brothers Stew might say. Black sports radio is more niche than sports radio itself. "Dominate"? You may want to rethink that one.

Zoner if my instincts are correct I would guess you are probably between the ages of 20-25, love da smack talk style, love da slang verbage, LOVE da Jim Rome...you like partying, hangin', sports, eye candy galore, you likes your Coors ice cold, your chicken wings extra crispy, you recently became a subscriber to Sly Stallones new magazine, FHM.com is among your favorite bookmarks, and you like your sports radio with all the trappings of a sports bar setting, Hooters as often as possible.

2 Live Stews are probably more than right up your alley.

Enjoy the feast!

Let's put it this way

If the rumors of Kincade leaving for ESPN Eadio turn out to be true, though I ahve been told they are false, 680 will be playing Spanish music within the year.
If it is Buck and Kincade vs. The Stews, I think that the fresh approach and creativity of the Stews will expose Buck and Kincade once and for all.

Re: Let's put it this way

Where do these lineup changes leave Chuck Oliver and Chris Cotter? I see Oliver is still listed on the station's website, but Cotter is not.

Re: You're kidding right??

Sorry to burst your bubble, Zoner, but I hardly think that the Stews moving to afternoon drive will be the final "nail in the coffin" for 680 (and this is coming from someone who is a HUGE fan of Ryan and Doug and their show). I think the Stews will do well, but I'm not sure they will clobber B&K (whose show I also like) as you are predicting. It's funny because some of you guys at the Zone have been predicting 680's demise ever since they signed on five years ago, and it hasn't happened yet! The bulk of B&K's listening audience probably doesn't listen to the Stews anyway, so I doubt they'll be turning the dial to 790. When fall comes and the Zone powers down around 6, that might hurt the Stews a little. In July, the Stews will be competing against one of their good friends and a fan of their show, Ryan Cameron. Many of the Stews listeners are also big fans of RC, so that should be interesting.

Sad to see that they've broken up Matt & Chuck Oliver-again. I enjoyed that show, and I have a hard time listening to Chuck Smith. I'm not sure that pairing is going to work, and I think Dimino needs someone working with him. I don't know if I could listen to him doing a show by himself. Occasionally it's OK, but not permanently. Why can't they put Chris and Nick back together, and rescue Cellini from that horrible morning show he's stuck with?

I hope they didn't fire Cotter. Good kid. OK on the air.
He has a degree from Tech. I would think he could make more money
outside of radio.

Okay, okay

Is it fair to say that if 680 did not have Buck and Kincade they would be back to simulcasting Headline News? I also never thought about the Ryan Cameron factor. Ryan had a huge following and that might hurt the Stews. There is always the other ace in the hole, Arbitron will always make sure that the diaries from the black sections of town count for more than just one vote.
B&K own the Northside arc, they will be beaten in the primarily black areas.

The press release from the Zone

Andrew Saltzman told me Cotter is gone but Chuck Oliver will remain as the roving football expert.

790 The Zone’s “2 LIVE STEWS” Hits AFTERNOON DRIVE

ATLANTA, GA- Sports Radio 790 The Zone announces today that Ryan and Doug Stewart, hosts of the “2 Live Stews,” will move to afternoon drive beginning Monday, June 6, 2005. The Stewart brothers, recently featured in Sports Illustrated and voted “Best Air Talent” at the annual Sports Radio Conference in March of this year expand to four (4) hours weekdays 3pm-7pm.

Says Neal Maziar, Vice President/ Station Manager of Sports Radio 790 The Zone, “The ‘2 Live Stews’ are the hottest radio show in the country. Their meteoric rise in Atlanta radio has been astounding and we are thrilled that they will be our anchor in afternoon drive for years to come.”

In addition to the Stews move, 790 The Zone also announced two key personnel moves. Former Falcon and V-103 personality Chuck Smith joins Matt Chernoff weekdays 12pm-3pm beginning Monday, June 6.

Finally, 790 The Zone announces “The Chris Dimino Show” which will air weekdays 10am-12pm. This show will give Atlanta sports fans a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with one of the most knowledgeable and insightful voices in the business.

The hugely popular “Mayhem in the AM” will continue to anchor morning drive weekday mornings 6am-10am.

Matt Edgar, Program Director of Sports Radio 790 The Zone, says, “I would put this roster against any sports station in the country. These moves are a direct reflection of our commitment to Atlanta to provide the most compelling radio lineup in the city.”

790 The Zone’s New Weekday Lineup:

“Mayhem in the AM,” 6 a.m. – 10 a.m., with Steak Shapiro, Mike Bell and Nick Cellini

The stews are being lauded for being black, thats it, there I said it. They are mildly entertaning, in small doses while the rest of their show sounds like a bad copy of 99x.

Its kinda obvious that you dont listen or you would realize that most of their listeners changed the channel at 3 simply cause B & K are on then. I am thrilled that they are being moved since now I wont have to listen to them anymore or to O Reilly. Hopefully 790 will just move Dimino to their slot and I will have something to listen to until B & K come on.
______________

They did break up Matt and Chuck? Thought he was just on vacation. Dammit. Chuck Smith is horrible, I cant listen to him without thinking how stupid he sounds for someone who actually played the game.
______________

I still dont know why all of you say that black sections always get counted twice in the book? Anyone care to let the cat out of the bag?
______________

Counted twice?

I never said that.
It is common knowledge that Arbitron sometimes weighs a book to make sure that the diaries returned are a perfect blend of the community at large. If they don't get a lot of black males returning diaries, they might weigh their answers at 1.5 to 1 for another group to try and create a balance.

It is the oft talked about problem that ARB has is they sned out so few diaries to a large market like ours, and more often than not, the return rate in some markets is very low. It would be good if they would roll out the PPM's here in Atlanta. Maybe then there would be a better indication of true ratings success or failure. But until then, it's all we got so we have to live with it and continute to debate it.....
______________

Re: Okay, okay

Is it fair to say that without the Stews, the Zone wouldn't have the ratings it has now? I mean, at this point, the Stews is pretty much all the Zone has going for it right now. What makes 790 so much better than 680? I know you're biased since you work there, but as a unbiased observer, I don't see that much difference between the two. The morning show is horrible because of Steak Shapiro, and will continue to be horrible because his ego won't allow him to stay off the air where he belongs. The afternoon show was just OK (I feel bad for Cotter getting canned, though).

While I have a different opinion than Big Bopper's regarding the Stews (different strokes for different folks, I suppose), I do agree that the lineup with these new changes has gotten WORSE. They broke up a really decent show in Southern Comfort, and I promise you Chernoff and Chuck Smith ain't gonna work!

What a dope...

Much like Donovan McNabb is good because of the liberal sports media, right?

I guess bringing in ratings and advertising revenue just doesn't mean much to you, but that's not a surprise given your first hilarious comment.

Hmmm...more African-Americans (presumably some who are sports fans) moving into the metro of a largely African-American city, but it's the Stews that represnt a 'passing fad'?

Maybe the real passing fad includes the removal of the 'whites only' sign in regards to the staffing of talk radio stations...and how a little outside-of-the-box thinking can prove to be lucrative.
______________
