That day also, NBC5 introduced their new station logo--the abstract 5 that somewhat resembled Caterpillar's old logo. Even though I was 8 at the time, I remember it all too well becase the 5 really stuck out

Is it just me, or does it seem like channel 5 changes their logo every few years or so? It seems like most stations stick with the same logo for a good 10 years or more before its changed. Yet i think this is what the third change in the last 10 years?<P ID="signature">______________

They've had the current logo since August 2000. As for the others...
--The late 90s version (Nov 95-August 2000)
--The mid 90s version, resembled their late 1970s 5 (July 25, 1992-Nov 1995)
--The "Caterpillar" 5 (Jan 26, 1986-Jul 24, 1992)
--Jan 1976-Jan 25, 1986 (Used with both just the N and the 11-feathered peacock)
--Fall 1974-Dec 1975 (This logo resembled Channel 5 Cleveland's old logo--had a very tubular look)
--About 1972-1974 (a "5" in Impact font in a rounded rectangle--also incorporated the NBC snake)

On Rich Samuel's Broadcasting in Chicago website, he also has pictures of a channel 5 logo circa 1968.

CBS2 is also as notorius as channel 5 regarding logo changes. They seemed to change their logos at the same rate as 5, especially after 1987 when they introduced the 2 w/the Chicago skyline.

And yet, WLS' logo has pretty much remained the same for, what, over three decades now? (Except, of course, they added the ABC logo next to it in the same year that they dumped "Eyewitness News.") Same logo for WABC in New York as well.

Correction: Make that 1962! So that's well over four decades! Check out the following at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_7_logo

Exactly which year was it that they dumped "Eyewitness News"? Sometime in the early 90's, right?

I believe it was 1996.

That had to be a local decision since I think NY and LA are still "Eyewitness News"

Actually, I could have sworn that NY switched to ABC 7 as well. I thought I remembered watching the news at a hotel in Manhattan and commenting how too similar WABC was with WLS.

I thought they were "ABC 7 Eyewitness News"... Of course, maybe that's LA.

You are correct. Check out 7online.com, WABC-TV's website.
