Four will be inducted for the class of 2009. My opinion is Kent Dana – deserving. W. Steven Martin – deserving. Dave Pratt – potentially. But who’s Bud Foster?

Ah, but AZ radio/TV is more than just Phoenix!

Bud Foster is a long-time TV news reporter/anchor who spent some time at
channels 12 and 10 years ago and has since put in stints at 4, 9 and 13 in
Tucson. He is currently a reporter at 13.

How would one differentiate between a "broadcaster" and a "news reader"?

Seems the former must have a personality of some sort and actually exhibit it on-air.

Sometimes these awards are given for pure longevity. That would be the case (in my opinion) for Bud Foster and Kent Dana. Both are essentially news readers (though Foster now reports) who have carved out a decent and distinguished career in their respective markets.

Are either Foster or Dana the best to ever do those jobs? No. There have been better anchors / reporters in Phoenix and Tucson over the years. But both have, at one time or another, attracted viewers, demonstrated competence and brought credit to the profession.

I've never been a big Pratt fan; I just don't care for his schtick. Having said that, he knows radio and works his buttocks off. He rose from nothing to become one of the biggest AM drive hosts in radio. Doing 20 years at one station is pretty remarkable in itself and he's still apparently in demand. I would put him in the HoF.

W. Steven Martin? That's easy: put him in twice. He's THE MAN!

Joe Adams!

One of these days, they have to put Joe Adams in there. The guy has always had a network-quality sound about him, but chose to stay in his home state of Arizona.

He started at KOY in the '70s and cut his teeth as a jock in Cottonwood in the '60s.

He was one of the first people on-air at KFYI, which is close to celebrating a quarter century on the air. Next to Pat McMahon and Al McCoy, I am trying to think of anyone who has had a longer on-air run in Phoenix radio (although I'm sure someone will think of someone - you guys always do!)

Beyond all that, he's a cool guy who I had the pleasure of sitting next to for more than two years.

As I am doing political consulting now, allow me to start the campaign --

JOE ADAMS FOR ARIZONA BROADCASTERS HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2010!!!

Joe Adams will one day be in the AZ Broadcasters Hall of Fame, an honor I have no dubt he will downplay to the point of absurdity. But since Joe is absurd in his own right, that's o.k.

Of course, Joe should in fact be the charter member of the Goofy-Looking Guy Hall of Fame. His mother dresses him funny.

Wow, I followed W. Steven Martin on the air at KNIX for nearly 8 years and consider him a friend.

He deserves this honor for not only 26 years on the air in morning drive working for Buck, Michael Owens and Larry Daniels, but for his dedication to charity work on a local level. His kids Xmas toy drive is still held and gets bigger every year. His show led the number one ratings KNIX and the rest of us enjoyed for many years starting in the 80's.

Also worked with Dave Pratt at KMLE.....all the years at KUPD and the following he built is commendable.

Congratulations to the new inductees! And I agree with Jim's nomination of Joe Adams!

The Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame also honors certain broadcasters. Not necessarily "news readers", but rather broadcasters who are also entertainers in their own right. Inductees include Pat McMahon and William Edward Compton. We also have a number of broadcasters on our advisory board. (I'm their PR Chairperson :)

The late progressive/free-form Phoenix pioneer Bill Compton deserves it! I'm glad people still remember him, even though he's been gone for quite awhile.

Compton DEFINITELY deserves it...

Marty Manning can't be far down on the list either...he was there for the early KDKB days and has stuck around in one form or another for a long time. Not to mention that he is a great guy...

Perhaps there might even be room for someone like Jim Burgundy in the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame?? ;D
