21 Jump Street the movie Vs. 21 Jump Street TV series

Here's what I've never quite understood the approach to some of these big screen adaptations of TV shows: Ideally, shouldn't producers/directors aim toward creating an extended, big-budget 'episode' that aims squarely toward the high notes people enjoyed about the original show?

Just from promos, I could estimate that this is a slapstick comedy that will feature some use of the internet and/or smartphones for a joke. Which might be fine for another comedy, but it's not at all what 21 Jump Street was. What's worse is the time period that the show existed. Given Hollywood's usual ability to pull off period piece films like The Help, Boogie Nights, or The Artist (or any work where current technology messes with plot devices or constructed reality)--could it be too much trouble to put Jonah Hill or Channing Tatum in what we'll call '1991'? That might make for a better movie, assuming people might try sampling the original show.

I give them credit for trying to do it different. That's what made the Brady Movie work. The family was stuck in a time warp.

@ Mark: Yes, but wasn't the original TV series a comedy anyways?

As for 21 Jump Street, has anybody got an opinion from Johnny Depp? Isn't that the show which made him a star in the first place? Lastly, the next movie from a TV or film series will be The Three Stooges, with Will Sasso of Mad TV fame playing Curly. All the reviews I've seen and heard sound awful.

The original TV series was a straight laced crime show. As far as I know, there wasn't anything of comedic nature about the show. For many, apart from the whole TV series being on DVD, the show hasn't been seen in syndication since the late 1990's, so more than likely that the younger audience (18-35) probably doesn't know about the original series or that Johnny Depp starred in it and probably many people think that the TV show was indeed a comedy when in fact it was the opposite.

What happened with The Six Million Dollar Man coming to the big screen? I thought word was that Jim Carrey was going to star in it and it was going to be a comedy along the lines of what they did with 21 Jump Street and was turning that into a comedy.

Since Depp makes a cameo--and is appearing in his own comedic remake of an unintentionally comedic TV series in Dark Shadows, it probably doesn't bother him much that they chose this spin. They're just having fun with some cheese from TV's past. Those that bow at the altar of the original(s) need not see the spoofs, and all is then well with the world.

Haven't seen the film but the trailers make it look like a mash-up of 21 Jump Street, Barney Miller and the Police Academy series of movies. Could be brilliant, could be god-awful.
