25 Years Ago Today... WHIT vanishes from the air in New Bern

My 100th Radio-Info Post
.....................................

Exactly 25 years ago today, on a Saturday morning before 10AM, a City of New Bern utility worker banged on the door of "New Bern's Rocker" WHIT 1450. He was there to turn out the lights. Spring had arrived, and the city's fear of frozen and busted water pipes at the business was gone.

The DJ was expecting the utility crew, and arranged for the local newspaper to do a short sidebar on the station's death. The reporter gathered facts and snapped a photo of the DJ playing the last record, “American Pie”. After the Legal ID, the transmitter was powered down, the lights were shut off, and the DJ, Dr. John, locked the doors behind them.

Fast forward over 20 years. I found a bunch of trash gathered up in a box in my parents’ attic from the time that I worked at WRNB, also in New Bern. One of the articles in the box was a reel-to-reel tape. It was "stuck" together and literally required baking in an oven to make it playable. On the tape was a 30 minute off-the-air aircheck of WHIT recorded during the noon hour the day before the station signed off. I copied it to metal cassette and have listened to it from time to time over the past five years. I didn’t make the original recording. And I have no idea where it came from. But I have it.

And if you want me to email you a copy of it, just email me. I’ll get you the file right away. My address is my first name @toddjenkins.com
And of course, my first name is todd.

On it, you’ll hear a great little AM rocker on life support - few commercials, Molly Hatchet, The Cars, REO Speedwagon, Devo and a kooky DJ having a goodtime. It was recorded at 12:05PM, Friday March 20th, 1981.
