People abandoning pet is a serious issue. Last night Tina Fey tried to make a (bad) joke out of it. In the 30 Rock episode Tina gives up on having a romantic relationship and adopts a cat. When she decides later that she may have a romantic future after all, she let's the cat go - and the cat is captured by a hawk. This is supposed to be the show's final big laugh. Shame on you Tina Fey! But you come from the city that hired Michael Vick, so maybe we should not be surprised at your callous attitude.

Are we so afraid of offending some group that we can't make jokes anymore?
It was just a joke about an off-camera situation--there was no visual (real or
computer-generated) of a cat being grabbed by a hawk.
Did they forget to put a "no animals were harmed..." disclaimer in the credits?
Will Bob Barker now be picketing Kabletown? :

It's not about whether "no animals were harmed." It's about a TV show saying animals are like Kleenex. If you don't feel like having it around any more, just turn it loose.

I had delicious bacon with my eggs today. I didn't feel bad for the pig that was slaughtered so it could reach my plate because that pig was yummy.

This kind of humor occurs fairly frequently - 30 Rock is not unique. I recently saw a rerun of Curb Your Enthusiasm in which a small dog gets stomped to death because people think it's a rat. Obviously, "no animals were harmed" and all that - the viewer doesn't see the dog being squished, though you see the scared man stomping the rat from the waist up. The fact that they made a humorous situation out of it did make me squirm in discomfort.
But a lot of humor these days involves pushing the envelope and making people at least momentarily uncomfortable. So in that context, I guess there's no reason animals should be a taboo subject. I've noticed that the occasional joke about child sexual molestation is creeping back into the acts of some stand-up comics after a couple decades of being taboo.
By the way - I'm not saying any of this is right, just making observations.

Relax. It's just a tv show. It didn't really happen. People in this country are turning into spineless lambs that can't buck up and take a joke. I had one person get offended at me the other day because I used the word 'yup'! I laughed my arse off and almost pissed my pants when they told me that I had hurt their feelings!

More crybaby liberals. I wish that all of those fantasy minded disneylanders would put there debit card where there mouth is. They should adopt or pay to feed all of those unwanted strays and not use my tax dollars. But, as usual, they don't want to spend any of their own money to support their crackpot ideas, but have no problem telling you how to use yours. Most of these so called pet lovers usually show little or no regard for their fellow humans. A few years ago, in my town, hoardes of animal do gooders packed city hall during their animal rights campaign, demanding a new, super expensive no kill adopt out only animal shelter, to replace the ancient dog pound disposal facility. Around the same time several preschool children were murdered by their own single parent, due to incompetent and ignorant child protect services college graduate clowns returning the kid to the violent parent against the protests of the grandparents. None of these animal lovers ever bothered to notice or even protest these acts of violence against toddlers. They didn't descend on city hall or start letter writing campaigns or swamp the local talk radio shows, they just didn't care about people as much as their precious animals. For the last few years, the no kill animal adopt out only Taj Mahal has been overcrowded, since none of these do gooder animal lovers don't want to take in the excess unwanted. Now you can't get animal control services to pick up any strays because there's no room at the inn. They tell us 'to take care of it ourselves'.

At the same time, I thought it was inappopriate for Liz Lemon to just abandon a cat. She's not an evil character who would be expected to do such things.
