33 Years Ago - October 14, 1975 - The End of KQV

I remember hearing JC Floyd on PEZ in late 1977. He was talking up the long intro of "Jet Airliner", which you may recall is about a minute and eight sec. And he WALKED ON THE VOCAL.

This was after Lee Douglas had left. I don't remember who the PD was, but Bill Cardille was doing mornings by this time. I remember that, after years of sounding good, being very disappointed with the sound of PEZ by the time I had moved to the Burgh.

I remember a lot of talk aboutr KQV running a liner toward the end that said "14K plays too much music."

PD was probably Jim Davis. He was there (PEZ) when I interviewed for a weekend gig in '78 or '79. I got as far as being invited down to cut an aircheck in their production room with their format. I had only college experience at the time and I think they concluded (correctly) that I wasn't quite ready..... and they went with some guy named Merkel.

And now you know.........

Good DAY.

As I recall the early live jock lineup included a spacey guy named Don Davis, Jessie Scott (who went on to be the overnight jock at WNBC in the Imus- Stern days), Bill Brewin and Ted Ferguson. Jimmy Roach, Steve Hansen, Marcie, Maxwell and Terry Caywood came later on.

Jessie did evenings on Country formatted WHN 1975-1980. She is now at XM as Jessie Scott. She was replaced on WDVE by Denise Oliver who was Howard Stern's PD at DC101 and is depicted in his movie (albeit as a smoker, which she is not). Denise was my VP/Programming at Unistar and Westwood One mid 90s until about 2001. She now is a consultant, mostly to Talk radio. Ted Ferguson had great success at NRJ Radio in France, then moved to one of the South Sea Islands, where I he may still be. I saw him every year at the NAB convention, but not since at least a decade ago.

Jessie actually just got caught up in the purge at XM ater the merger.

I also recall hearing Bill Brewin on a smooth jazz station in Ft. Myers, FL in the late 90's or thereabouts.

The Pittsburgh AM jocks in the 50s included Art Pallan and Clark Race on KDKA, Jay Michael on WCAE, and, yes, Barry Kaye on WJAS. Those are the guys I listened to until I picked up lowly WHOD from Homestead and got introduced to R&B and the Daddio of the Raddio, Porky Chedwick!

As I remember, it must have been in the late 60s when KQV-FM, later WDVE, came onto the scene. They played only the piano riff from Derek and the Dominoes' Layla for days and days... with Little Jimmy Roach giving the tune the name of a different Top 40 hit everytime it played!

I may not have all of those memories straight, folks, but I sure do remember what a great time it was!

Wasn't WCAE a full time TOP 40 at one time going head to head with KQV, but signing off at 2:30 AM? Does anybody remember this?

Art Pallan was doing MOR on WWSW in the Fifties. I'm not sure when KD went Soft Top 40
