Somehow, someone at Clear Channel sees the value of WHJY, and has left it largely in tact as Clear Channel has systematically destroyed its three other stations in the market. Thank you, Clear Channel, for keeping Paul and Al. And congrats to these two Rhode Island radio legends. Let's hope that Clear Channel does the same with Charles.
Agreed with Paul & Al..two of the best in the biz. Couldn't agree less on Charles; a bitter, unpleasant loudmouth who would be best served by turning off his political and opinionated rants and let more music play.
And..to this day..I still don't understand how CC can leave a solid product like HJY alone while destroying all their other stations in the market. B101 used to be a shining, local example of what radio is meant to be, but then by replacing true personalities with cardboard cut-outs and homogonizing the playlist to the same thing that every other CC classic hits station is playing, they ruined it. Admittedly, SNE used to be a bit of a mess in the old days, being forced through constant tweakings and nickname changes--but at least it, too, had on-air content that showed it cared about its local listeners.
Ah, how I long for the day when every station in town had individual, local owners who wanted to be "the best," and that competition paid big dividends to the listener. Our only hope is that one day the big companies will realize radio isn't the cash cow they once envisioned to be and we see increasing numbers of spin-offs. While radio will never return to what it was--at least it could be a big step back into the right direction.

Arthur Carlson keeps his job as general manager of WKRP only because his mother, Lillian Carlson, better known as "Mama Carlson", owns the station. If that show was still on today, Arthur would be out a job because Mama Carlson would be dead and Clear Channel would own the station. Then again Arthur's dead too. Nevermind.
First, welcome back, Skynet. Second, not that he needs defending, but Charles is all we have left in terms of personality radio on the FM dial (outside of morning drive). Besides having arguably the best pipes in the market, he adds intelligence and good banter to the afternoon drive. I also like his perspective. By my count, he is the only liberal/progressive voice on the Providence radio dial (well, Paul and Al are progressives, but they don't take political positions).

A Good Locally Owned Station
LOL.
A good locally owned station is 1320 AM WATR out of Waterbury, CT. They are known for their mix of local and national programming of both the music and talk variety. They do lots of remotes from community events and shined with their local coverage during Tropical Storm Irene. (What other station would blow out their Sunday Ethnic Block to cover a natural disaster?) They also have High School Sports Play-By-Play.
Monday-Friday there is 22 1/2 hours of local talk per week, which includes specialty paid for local talk shows 6PM-7PM.
Local Music Programming makes up 33 1/2 hours of the week Monday-Sunday including a Big Band/Jazz/Swing and Standards Show Saturday Mornings a Sock-Hop Show Saturday Nights, and a Solid Gold Rock & Roll Doo-Wop Show on Sunday nights. (The 33 1/2 includes their morning show).
Plus there's a long running Polka and a long running Italian Language Show on Sundays.
Outside the local programming they carry John Gibson and Alan Colmes Monday-Friday and Oldies Music from Dial Global.
