40 Years of "News at 10" on 5

Yesterday, a big campaign touting "40 years of news at 10PM" on WNYW/5 (nee WNEW) was unveiled, not only on a bus ad campaign, but of course, on-screen. The animated bottom-left thingamajig now rotates between the Fox 5 logo and a similarly structured one reading "40 Years 10PM". (Hope some poor sap doesn't tune in and think they're channel 40!) Props to them, and I do hope they plan on some retrospective.

By the way - how does someone look at this campaign and NOT think of the other campaign on Channel 5 marking a similar milestone from back in the Metromedia days? You know - "Forty Years of Fine Tuning"?

There will be special reports starting the week of the 11th.
I know the station is looking for old video, so if you have any older tape you should give them a call.

There's plenty of old footage on the web, but the quality probably isn't broadcast. Maybe they could contact the posters and ask for the originals.

The reference to "40 years of fine tuning" gives me a mental image of some old guy getting up every 5 minutes to adjust the rabbit ears. Probably not quite what Metromedia had in mind. :) I do remember the campaign though.

Am I the only one who thinks that the current font used for the number 5 on air looks similar to the Metromedia version of the 80's?

You're not alone! I do as well, only it's a little thinner. But props to 5 for doing this promo.

Was WNYW always an independent? And who started 10pm news on independents? My guess is NYW was one of the first, but KTLA in LA may have beaten them to it.

WNYW was always a Fox station. Fox bought it and flipped the callsign in 1986. Prior to that it was independent WNEW-TV. Way back in the 50's when the station was a Du Mont affiliate it was WABD.

There will be a half hour special on the 16th at 10:30 hosted by Rosanna and Ernie.

If WNYW has only been doing news at 10:00 for 40 years, I guarantee that either KTLA or KTTV beat them to it. Both stations were doing news at 10:00 by the mid or late 50s (about 50 yrs ago), but I couldn't tell you which was first.
