I almost forget it was on tonight...

I *completely* forgot it was on. :-[ Probably was thinking too much about the tourist train I was looking forward to catching yesterday (and caught). ;D

I heard on the news this morning (too busy watching
golf yesterday afternoon) that Jerry raised more than
$64 million, up $3 million from last year, and that since
the telethon expanded beyond New York in 1966 he's
raised more than $1 billion.

Over $1.3 million raised here in Hartford/New Haven via WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford. They've been carrying the telethon for about 5 years or so now. Before that, it aired on WFSB-TV (CBS) channel 3 of Hartford. This market first cracked the $1 million mark locally in 1989, as far as I know.

In Philly, the WPHL-TV broadcast raised over 2 million dollars. Not bad.

"Your career as a comedian, actor, and billion-dollar fundraiser is over!", shouted Rosie O'Donnell in a recent blog posted on her website, imrosieandimgay.com.

I remember when, in the TV Guide listings, it would read on Sunday at 9 PM "3/9" (WWOR) start the telethon, then at 11 PM, 3 aired news and rejoined at the odd time of 11:20 PM. And on Labor Day, CBS coverage of US Open Tennis that normally would be carried on 3 would be aired on 61.

WWOR had carried the telethon for a looong time in New York. Before that, Channel 5, when it went by WNEW.

I don't know how much Fairbanks raised, but the Anchorage (KTUU) total was over $315,000.

By the way, KTVF planned to show the last portion of the telethon (with the final toteboard and "You'll Never Walk Alone") after golf, but because it ran over they hit to Oprah Winfrey at 3:00, leading many viewers to flip over to WGN for the final moments...not to mention donating to them (like I did)!!!!

I don't want to start a debate about freedom of speech here,
but does anyone really pay attention to Rosie?

Anybody who thinks that Jerry's slip of the tongue is going to hurt his fundraising potential are out of their collective minds! Jerry will be forgiven in time and just in time for next years telethon. The people love this man and always will. I hear my gay friends call each other by that name all the time and in either case there is no excuse! Jerry said he was sorry and thats good enough for me. The MDA will never walk away from Jerry because he will never walk alone! Besides Jerry is the MDA! They will never fill the mans shoes when he is dead because the people love this man he will never be topped! nuff said... and as far as Rosie's blog goes, just consider the source! She is such a windbag!

I saw the clip, and what struck me above anything else was just how out of it Jerry appeared. He looked drunk! That word slipped out in what appeared to be a gap in an aging facade, allowing us a peek into an old Rat Pack-era mind.

IMO, this is nothing compared to his truly offensive "baby-making machine" comment several years back. He sounded rather lucid then.

What Jerry's done for MDA over the years will assert itself. Personally I find this telethon to be long-past its expiration date, and looking at the posts about stations preempting blocks of it, the broadcast will shrink to death long before Jerry Lewis gives it up.

Blowhards like Rosie O. are only wasting their hot air -- save it for the real homophobes!

I'm inclined to agree that the telethon may be
past its day. Not only are so many stations
carrying only a few hours (usually the last
few), but it's been relegated from market
leaders to CW or MyNet affiliates in many
cities; for example, in Raleigh/Durham it
used to be on WTVD (ABC) but is now on
WLFL (CW), a move from Channel 11 to
Channel 22 which, in itself, is a move
downward. Jerry also lost some big ones,
like WNYW and WAGA, when they became
Fox o&os; as I understand it, Fox policy
wouldn't allow them to carry the telethon
(somebody correct me on this).

Jerry is 81 now and has weathered some
health problems in recent years. Who,
if anyone, will run the telethon when he's
gone?

Sadly, yes...Fort Wayne first got it in, I think, 1973. NBC33, then WKJG, carried it for years, and it's now on the CBS affiliate, WANE Channel 15. Back in the early 70's, it was a huge deal for TV to be on all night, at least in FW ("Stay Up With Jerry And Watch The Stars Come Out!"), not to mention the fact that Jerry as well as Ed McMahon were in their prime, and that the local stations don't promote it nearly as heavily as they used to. I honestly tried to watch a few times this year, and literally never got past about 30 seconds. The local segments seem to go much longer than they used to, and the national segments are just about unwatchable anymore.

I think Ed McMahon also had a few martinis too many during the last few hours, especially since he went entirely off the script to introduce the IAFF chairman a few times, and even introduced Jerry in the same tone as he would introduce corporate representatives (when he meant to introduce the latter).

Here in Memphis, the telethon is still on WREG channel 3 just like it has been since 1969. I also remember when it was a big deal that tv was going to stay on all night and I would try to stay up as late as I could to watch.

I think the telethon would be better off if they tried to get more modern entertainment and hosts. I have nothing but respect for Jerry Lewis, Ed McMahon and Norm Crosby but they are all in their 80s and you have to wonder how many more years they can host. Someone told me Billy Gilman, the teenage country singer hosted some in the middle of the night so maybe he will take it over someday.

Every time I tuned in this year, it could have been Labor Day 1973. Saw Tony Orlando, Maureen McGovern ("The Morning After") and even Clint Holmes ("Playground In My Mind").

Part of me kind of likes it this way. Where else can you see Jack Jones on TV these days? But for the sake of MDA, they need to bring it in to the 21st century.
