45 years ago today, September 7, 1967 at 'high noon', WRCP 1540 AM & 104.5 FM switched from MOR to become Philadelphia's first full market country music station. The original year had a 'western' sounding jingle package (jingles patterned after the Marlboro Man commercials) & MOR sounding DJ's but soon went to a more modern country sound & uptempo style under PD Don Paul brought in from a country station in Rochester, NY. & local DJs like Shelly Davis & Jerry Kline from WXPN (which used real college students on air back then). The station held the format through the Bicentennial era until 1977 when the FM switched to 'beautiful country' Sunny 104 WSNI under Nelson Hobdell from WWSH, then slowly segued into the AC/oldies "Sunny" format. The AM daytimer held on with Ron Cade & Lee Richards (Sarah Louise) but couldn't compete when WUSL and WFIL went country in 1981 and swiched to oldies. WRCP - Salute!
