50,000 watt 1540/WNWR to change COL from Philadelphia to Bala Cynwyd

Yup. Hard to believe. And a construction permit for an antenna modification, aparently from the same antenna site. The CP actually looks like a signal reduction.

Never thought of Bala Cynwyd was a geographically descriptive metroplis.

WNWR-AM Technical Info:
Status Construction Permit for a Class D AM Station

New City Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania
Hours of Operation Daytime Operation Only
Antenna Mode Directional - Daytime Only
Power 50,000 Watts
Number of Towers 3

I remember that during the final couple of years of WPGR, they had actually added 500 watts of night time coverage too. After the flip to WNWR it was back to daytime only....

Mike Venditti got the nighttime power authority for 1540. He wanted the Geator to apply to change the COL back then to Bala, but for the life of me I can't remember why! I know it was for a concession that WPGR would get in exchange for bringing first service to Bala Cynwyd. And that 500 watts wasn't bad. It covered all of the city and Camden cleanly without chatter. I don't know why the current owners don't use it.

So they will still be a daytimer?

The most obvious reason for a CoL change would be an intended change to full-time operation with low night power (just like before). With 500W at night (or whatever it was or will be), WNWR cannot meet the signal requirements for a station licensed to Philadelphia. Apparently, they can do so by being licensed to the smaller community of Bala. The possibly apocryphal travails of that station getting and then surrendering its nighttime authority are the basis for enduring radio legends. Maybe this time, they will make it work and will actually receive a license to cover.
