50th Anniversay of 1010 WINS as an All New Station

What DJs at WINS in 1965 became newscasters when the station changed format? The only one that I can think of is Stan Z. Burns.

Brad Phillips and Paul Sherman continued as newscasters on WINS. Paul often subbed for Alan Freed. Hard to believe Alan Freed died 50 years ago today.

You know what would make a great golden anniversary gift? An FM signal. Just sayin'...

WINS is one of the most consistent stations in history. They truly are all news all the time. No sports play by play,no long term shows, just news. They will have their 50th anniversary on April 19th and since the beginning of the year they made mention of it. Wonder if they will do any retrospectives as the date nears. I would love to see them focus on each year once a day, say 50 days prior to April 19. Short vignettes starting in 1965 and moving forward. Looking forward to what they might do,if anything.

The change from Top 40 to News is one of my earliest radio memories. I can recall where I was when Johnny Holliday played "Out In The Streets" by the Shangrilas, their last song. It was just before 8PM on Sunday April 18. They went into their usual public affairs programming and signed off at Midnight. They returned to the air at 5:30 that morning with the new format. Very few stations have 50 years in the same format.

I remember back in 1965 some were skeptical that an all news format would work out. I remember that in the late 1970s the Yankee games were broadcast on WINS. WCBS 880 is the backup station for overflow games on WFAN. Thus, there is always one all news station on the air in NYC.

A good idea would be to bring back some of the retired newscasters.
