520 Concord Parkway - Historic Radio Building Demolished

Word has reached me that Concord's heritage broadcasting complex at 520 Concord Parkway has been demolished. The building was constructed to house WEGO-1410am, and was expanded as the company grew. In 1961, WEGO-FM 97.9 (the current WPEG) was born in the building. As broadcast consolidation took place in the 1990's two more stations, WGIV-1600am and WBAV-FM 101.9 briefly called that address home.

By the year 2000, WPEG, WGIV and WBAV had all moved to their current South Boulevard studios in Charlotte, and WEGO relocated their studios to a strip shopping center on Cabarrus Avenue in Concord. The building has been deserted for about a decade, so it was about time for something to happen.

The tower is still there. WPEG's backup transmitter and WEGO's main transmitter are still there, although WEGO has a CP for an antenna move. I never worked at 520 Concord Parkway, but knew many who cut their teeth in the business in that building. Here's wishing you memories of "The Big PEG" and "WEGO, where WE-GO one step further".

Later . . . .

Matt...

WPEG's backup was moved from there some years ago. It is now part of the CBS FM backup on the tall tower on Radio Rd.

Also, it's WTIX, not WEGO.

I would welcome a signal improvement. Especially at night when KQV takes over.

What they really need to fix are the outages. They're lasting a minute or more, with frequent very brief glitches.

There are satellite dishes all over the WEGO studios which have been turned into barber shops.

The tall tower is on the way down today, I just drove past the old location and noticed the tower was much shorter, only about 100 feet were standing when I went by. The rest was felled away from the highway and was laying on the ground.

There were a number of onlookers with cameras and video cameras, so you may see a blip about this on the TV news tonight or in one of the papers.

Time marches on I suppose and all things appear to be only temporary.

SIGH..........
