There's already an Air America affiliate in the market

Of course the reason there are "no hosts from Air America" is that Air America already has an affilate in the market, KOMY/1340, which is carrying both Franken and Rhodes live.

Progressive Talk Stations Head to Head

Interesting. What is it now, two or three markets with two progressive talk stations, one mainly AAR and one independent/Democracy Radio? As I recall, this is the situation in Cleveland/Akron and in San Antonio. Curious to see the numbers for Franken v Hartmann, Miller v Springer, Schultz v Rhodes. If the Democracy Radio hosts do well head to head, it could cost AAR clearances in non-competitive markets.

Actually, it's the case in neither market above.

Here in Northeast Ohio, for a few weeks, WJMP/1520 (Air America full-time, rimshot east suburban Akron daytimer) competed with new liberal talker WARF/1350 (Miller, Jones, Lionel, other non-AAR libtalkers, full signal Akron market station with decent Cleveland market coverage). Not long after 1350 flipped to libtalk, 1520 announced it was picking up Fox Sports Radio...which, oddly enough, was 1350's former format.

1520 has, as far as I know, never shown up in the Akron book, and libtalk wasn't likely to change that...the signal is just plain awful, in part due to protection of co-channel WINW/1520 Canton. 1350 would wipe the floor with it.

In San Antonio, as far as I know, the AAR-affiliate-to-be hasn't signed on yet, and KPRT/92.5 is alone in the format. There was word that Border Media Partners was going to flip KZDC/1250 to libtalk with AAR, but that hasn't happened yet... and now I've heard on the San Antonio board that it might be another BMP station.

You failed to mention that WARF has now picked up both Al Franken and Randi Rhodes from Air America.

KPRT does carry Jerry Springer.

And there are two libtalkers in Madison, Wisc.

Re: Progressive Talk Stations Head to Head

I think its wonderful that this "failure" format is thriving......gee now there is a tiny bit ...a small bit of competition.......no matter who "wins" this competition.....the Liberal/Progressive format wins........congrats to Peter B Collins....who I understand is a part owner from earlier posts

They carried Jerry before Air America Radio picked up syndication rights to the show. Springer still controls syndication rights to his show, produced at WCKY, Cincinnati, and AAR is one of his affiliates. KPRT's deal is with Springer, not AAR.

Correct, and I've mentioned it all over these boards. But at the time it launched, WARF was going without AAR programming. They only picked it up when WJMP left the libtalk format...when there was a "two station" situation, 1350 had Thom Hartmann in middays and Ed Schultz repeats when there wasn't baseball at night.

As noted below, KRPT signed up for Springer before the show made a deal with AAR to become a "nationwide affiliate". They, like WTAM/1100 Cleveland, air Springer without AAR's liners.

AAR is listing these stations as affiliates, when they only carry the Springer show, and carry it outside the auspices of AAR. "They have Springer, Springer is on AAR, so they are AAR affiliates!" The deals are separate, and both KRPT and WTAM's carriage pre-dates the deal.

> And there are two libtalkers in Madison, Wisc.

Forgot about that one, though it's sort of 1-1/2 now. WTDY/1670 lost Ed Schultz to CC's WXXM/92.1. I don't know if you count WTDY as a "libtalker" now, as I don't know much about their lineup.

KRXA 540 Vs. KOMY 1340..

Have been listening to both this week..

KRXA informs it's listeners that it is a "Station under construction".. The signal is VERY strong through the Monterey/Santa Cruz Area, and has some excellent programming on.. Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, and Ed Schultz are a winning combination!

The station THOUGH tends to break into a musical promo at the bottom of the hour and cuts off the last 2 minutes of the talk shows.. I found it interesting that they chose to run CBS News at the Top of the Hour, but they also have local Traffic, Weather, and News Reports during Morning Drive..

KOMY is somewhat of a train wreck.. It simulcasts some programming from Sister Station KSCA, which is a right-wing Limbaugh, Savage, talk outlet.. KOMY starts off the day with shock jock MANCOW in the Morning, which runs until 8am, then they carry a simulcast of KSCA's Good Morning Monterey, then they break into Franken, Rhodes, and some local talk shows.. Ending it all off with Hannity's whipping boy, Alan Colmes at 7pm.. I really wish that they would drop Alan for Mike Malloy!! and maybe drop Mancow for Springer?!?..

In all though, it's really nice to FINALLY have some progressive talk stations here on the Central Coast..

stations w/ Hartmann, Miller, Lionel, etc. - vs. AAR hosts - and affiliates with both -

Interesting...These two stations...one w/ AAR, and one w/o AAR, will be competing...in market #77 surveyed at about 557,400 people according to RAdio and Records on-line...(Monterey/Salinas/SantaCruz).

In seattle/tacoma, Air America/AM 1090 will add non-AAR hosts Thom Hartmann, Stephanie Miller, Clark Howard, Lionel, and Amy Goodmann effective This Weekend...as best-ofs (replacing many hours of Air america hosts that were also best ofs). So in that market, their progressive talker will have a monopoly of the "national progressive hosts" on one station. They will definitely get more listeners on weekends...and the last time I checked Thom's affiliates, it will be Hartmann's largest market - #13 ... (Portland would probably be next w/ Thom's local show - #24):

That will end in a second if another station agrees to give these shows live weekday clearance. It's not really locking up anything, just giving weekends a shot at actually attracting a few listeners who would normally fear all-repeat weekends.

Indeed...and if Clear Channel ever wants to convert its 24/7 FOX sports outlet to progressive talk (850 KHHO lic to Tacoma), they could add some combo of Press,Miller,Hartmann,Clark Howard,Dr.Joy Browne,Lionel,Colmes,Basham...

The problem with 850 covers the south part of the market, with directional antenna array and restricted power north to Seattle...so it would be a south puget sound area progressive talk station...

With the ground conductivity so poor in the general region, you practically need 50,000 watts day to get in the ratings...Maybe 850 could go higher during the day, I haven't studied it...they are now 10kW day, 1kW night...
