"60 Minutes" Tonight (September 18th) Abbreviated In Eastern and Central Time Zones

Due to the network's live broadcast of the Primetime Emmy Awards (due to begin at 8 P.M. EDT) tonight (September 18th) and the fact the network had an NFL doubleheader today, CBS' "60 Minutes" did not begin until just past 7:30 P.M. EDT, and will only run until 8 P.M. EDT.

If the Primetime Emmy's air live in the Mountain and Pacific time zones, "60 Minutes" will probably be seen in full after the Emmy ceremonies end (aproximately 8 P.M. PDT/9 P.M. MDT). If the Primetime Emmys are going to air on a tape-delay in the Mountain and Pacific time zones (i.e. 8 P.M. PDT, 7 P.M. MDT), then a full-length edition of "60 Minutes" would run at what is the show's usual time in those regions (7 P.M. PDT/6 P.M. MDT).

Should the Primetime Emmy ceremonies end on-time at 11 P.M. EDT, I wonder if CBS affiliates in the Eastern and Central time zones are going to pressure the network to keep running abbreviated editions of the show on NFL doubleheader weeks as to allow their late local newscasts to begin on-time, since "Cold Case" and the Sunday-night movies would begin on-time at 8 and 9 P.M. ET respectively.

Here in Denver (Mountain Time Zone) on KCNC/CBS4 we will see "60 Minutes" in it's full length version followed by the Primetime Emmy's tape-deleyed.

Dawn, did the show run for an hour (6-7 MDT)?

Here in the bizarro AZ time zone, 60 Minutes just
started in PHX at 6 MST. KPHO-TV has the Emmy show
scheduled for 7 MST in pattern (delayed).

Hey left coasters--are you getting a CBS Evening News
at 6/6:30 PDT?

Seems now we "can't tell the players without a
scorecard" or rather, can't see what options CBS has
planned since they passworded the CBS Broadcast
Control website over a year ago.

In Seattle, KIRO-7 airs it at 5:30PM(PDT), and after its hour-long "Eyewitness News" at 6 will air the Sunday night lineup at 7PM(unless they edit some questionable content made during the delayed 8PM EMMYs telecast).

Most networks, if faced with a live event that may run overtime, have a policy called "fill to the top/bottom of the hour". This was put into place after Dan Rather's 1987 tantrum and walkout in Miami left the entire CBS network in black for eight minutes. CBS Sports went to black at 6:32 PM thinking Rather was in the studio ready to go, but he got his britches in a wad over doing a "truncated newscast" and was not there. Basically what it means is if the event goes past, say, 8:20 PM, the network will fill to the bottom of the hour so programs can be joined in progress in an orderly fashion. If the event goes to 8:49 PM, the network will fill to 9:00 to enable everybody to get back on schedule nice and cleanly. Breaking news bulletins are exempt.

A very detailed description of the walkoff/blackout incident can be found in Ken Auletta's excellent book, "Three Blind Mice", starting on page 421.

Highly doubtful. It's half the country. 60 Minutes is an institution, and with CBS doing--on average--respectably with the Sunday night movies, there's no reason to suddenly expect stations will push for changes. Could a handful prefer it that way? Sure. But few people would ever suggest tampering with a winning formula is the smart choice.

While I think the affiliates could make a stonger argument
for an abbreviated "60 Minutes" in the Eastern and Central
time zones than back when it was number one or close to it,
I think this is just a one-shot deal. After all, why should
the eastern half of the country see just 30 minutes, and the
less-populated western half see the entire hour? After all,
not everyone in the East and Midwest has KCBS on DirecTV or
Dish Network.

I don't think an abbreviated "60 Minutes" will ever become
CBS policy. AFAIK, it's still a cash cow for the Eye network.

I have DirecTV but can't afford KCBS (or WCBS, or WNBC/KNBC or WABC/KABC or WNYW/KTTV for that matter; but they'd be fun to have I reckon). I'm stuck with what's fed my *local* Big 4 stations.

Re: "60 Minutes" Tonight (September 18th) Abbreviated In Eastern and Central Time Zones

Would it be possible to get the NFL to start the CBS games an hour or half hour earlier? That could be a win/win for everyone since you can have a post game show running into a full 60 Minutes.
______________

No. The NFL does not answer to the TV networks. They do as they are told and that's the end of it. The NFL is the most powerful privately-held intity in the US. They don't care what the games lead into or how it fits on CBS's schedule. They have had games at 1 and 4:15 for over 25 years, and will not change.

Re: "60 Minutes" Tonight (September 18th) Abbreviated In Eastern and Central Time Zones

I have all the New York stations, but that is because they are my locals.
There was some law that took effect at the start of the year which makes it downright impossible to get the NY and LA big 4, which is not good.
______________

I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I'd bet everything that CBS won't turn 60 Minutes into TV's equivalent of Play Doh--molding it to fit whatever time remains after football--anytime in the forseeable future. Never mind the name of the show itself...but it's as close to an institution as TV can get.

Re: "60 Minutes" Tonight (September 18th) Abbreviated In Eastern and Central Time Zones

Do any stations put the west coast feed on a DTV channel?

Actually, the late games used to start at 4pm on the dot, they were moved back 15 minutes (5 minutes if it's not a doubleheader) several years ago.
And up until the early 80s, some games used to start at 2pm eastern (mostly games in the central time zone).

You have to live in an area where you can't receive a clear broadcast signal of the nearest local affiliates (i.e. the middle of nowhere).
