'60s Songs You Don't Hear Anymore for Obvious Reasons...

Santana's Black Magic WOMAN, circa 1969, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap's WOMAN, WOMAN, (1967?), Helen Reddy's I Am WOMAN, early 70's...

Of these three songs, only "Evil Woman" really belongs.

Actually, "Evil Woman" is the only one of the above-mentioned that actually still gets airplay. You can add Cliff Richard's "Devil Woman" for some airplay right around Halloween.

Yes-- hits of the '60's are being choked off the playlists of "oldies" stations, as many of them program only 30-years back.

"Black Magic Woman" is still in classic hits rotation up this way, as is "Devil Woman" -- and not just around Halloween. Up until last year, when more '80s titles were added (a process that is ongoing), we used to get "Woman, Woman" and several other Puckett hits, but I think all but "Young Girl" are gone now.

Evidently, "Sexy and 17" by the Stray Cats also belongs on this list. Apparently any song about finding 16- or 17-year-olds "attractive" seems to be questionable now.

But they played "Young girl get out of my life, my love for you is way out of line" on Houston's then Oldies 107.5 back in 2003.

i can`t remember the last time i heard brewer and shippley`s "one toke over the line" on the radio.

Last year on KKMJ's Super Songs of the 70's and this year on KXBT True Oldies Channel.

One toke over the line sweet jesus one toke over the line sitting down by the railroad station....

"You're Sixteen, You're Beautiful and You're Mine" Johnny Tilliston and later by Ringo Starr.
"Jesus Christ Superstar" recorded by the broadway cast.
"Indian Giver" by the 1910 Fruitgum Company
I like songs that make people nervous and cause us the question our changing frame of reference.

All of these seem a little weird now and are even better pieces of music because of this.

As I said earlier in this thread, some such songs "slip through the cracks," and still receive airplay. And his 16-year-old in 1980 would be 47 now. Easy for me to remember because I'm 47 now! ;D

And I am even OLDER; I remember "She's Only 13..." by the Mothers of Invention (Frank Zappa). Even back then I found this unacceptable. And I was still a teenager!

With me, it was a nostalgia thing. I wasn't really taken with it the first time around, but by the time it was reissued in 1989, I was 25, and that one just sort of "took me back." I was curious, however, why that one was rereleased, given that it had nearly made the top ten the first time. Most of those other late '80s reissues of early '80s "misfires" were of tunes that, for whatever reason, really just never had a chance to become a hit the first time. (Maybe it was because some of them didn't have music videos!) I started a thread on the '80s board "the late '80s rerelease craze," about this very issue. It is probably still there if you want to check it out.

I didn't realize that it was that old, or that it resurfaced during the re-issue craze. (But it's worth pointing out that the reissue craze itself eventually ran its course, and some of those last reissues fizzled the second time, as well. Case in point: "What About Me".) My only familiarity with "Dancing in Heaven" was when some couples on Dance Fever danced to it around 1982-1983. So I'll always associate "Dancing in Heaven" with Dance Fever.

I recently heard one of those songs "Shake It" on internet radio. Talk about "oh wow" I totally forgot about that song. It sounded great, Is it just me or does Ian Matthews kind of sound like Rita Coolidge?

I think there are two discussions going on this thread. Songs not played today for politically correct reasons and songs simply not played anymore...there are zillions of songs like that on OTA radio.

New technology has outdated Paul Simon's "Kodachrome", but it's still a great song. Some stations used to cut the "crap" out of it. Are any stations that are playing it today still doing the edit?
