'60s Songs You Don't Hear Anymore for Obvious Reasons...

I recently heard Lou Reed-Walk On The Wild Side. The song does nothing for me because I heard it too many times (although I like other Lou Reed and Velvet Underground songs). That song could never be a hit today because of politically incorrect lyrcs such as "colored girls".

Was "giving head" played unedited from this song as a current in 1973? I don't remember. The ironic thing is that even if our nations moral values are much worse compared to 1973 I don't think there is any way there could be a CHR hit today with "giving head" in the lyrics.

Generally, AOR stations played the "giving head" version, CHRs played a version with that entire verse excised. "Colored girls" was left untouched in both.

Both Walk The Wild Side and Kodachrome when heard in DFW are uncut.

I'd be surprised if anyone is chopping the "crap" out of "Kodachrome" now. You've got to remember that in the early '70s, "damned" was a big deal when Judy Collins sang it in "Someday Soon," so you can see how "crap" could offend the sensibilities of some in station management. Neither causes as much as a raised eyebrow these days, when even little kids routinely say something they don't like "sucks."

we never edited anything as far as i know..had to fight the manager like heck to play "Ramblin Man" by the Allmans..he was convinced it was country...

Another view: As I remember, political correctness heaped plenty of pressure indeed on American culture, even in 1973. I was working C/W back then, and remember doing a double take at the "colored girls" lyric. As an exile from New York's so-called Village scene and it's steely embrace of the "FUGS", along with Frank Zappa's "She's Only 13", I felt no shock at hearing "the "head" lyric.

Another tune you don't hear anymore, "Someday Soon".

Probably not because of the "damned," but because it wasn't that big a hit to begin with. I think the oldies/classic hits format has been happy with playing two folk-country-sounding songs for a couple of decades now ("Teach Your Children" and "Different Drum") and isn't about to start adding more. "Both Sides Now" was a bigger hit for Collins, and you're not hearing that these days either.

I remember back when I was working at the old carrier current college AM station on campus (the station that only got as far as the dorms, if it even got that far!) back in the '80s, we got all the old records that were cast off by the FM station (the station that actually got heard!). There were two that I recall that had "DON'T PLAY" written on them. One was "Bitch" by the Rolling Stones, and the other was "Go All the Way" by the Raspberries. The first one, I could understand, given that I had only heard on AOR, if there, but the second one, I had been hearing on the radio for YEARS prior to that! I later realized that the "DON'T PLAY" admonitions had probably been written on those records back in the early '70s, when those records were brand new. Of course, even if I had played it over that carrier-current station, it's unlikely that anyone would have heard it.

At the college carrier-current Top 40 I hung around at in the '70s (unofficial music librarian and picker of potential hits), Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You" had a "Do not play" on it when it was a big national hit. Why? The PD/MD and all the jocks hated the song. I'd heard it for the first time on AM one night and immediately thought it was different enough to be a huge hit and told the PD/MD so -- he couldn't stand it, he tried it out on the jocks and they couldn't stand it, and it never got played. Ever. I got branded as "the guy who likes 'Lovin' You,'" but I couldn't stand it either. I just thought it sounded like a hit.

Albuquerqe's KQEO had a popular graveyard jock in the 60's & 70's, who did a gag called "The Bomb of the Week", songs he predicted would never make the TOP 50. The DJ's on-air name was Keith Wade. Don't know what's become of Keith, but if he's still around, I'd bet he could entertain us with his own choices for this thread.

One of his "Bomb..." picks backfired on ol' Keith, Blue Swede's knock-off of BJ Thomas' "Hooked On A Feeling", which received embarassingly heavy AM airplay.

I actually liked the Blue Swede version! But that is probably because I was about 10 years old when it became a hit! ;D

I was about 20 and found it amusing the first dozen times I heard it and then started switching the station whenever it came on. Funny, though, I actually liked their follow-up, an uptempo version of the Association's "Never My Love." Maybe it was the absence of the ooga-chakas.

Lke I said, Keith mis-called that one. The B-side of Swede's "Hooked..." 45 RPM was a gem as well: "Do You Like B_ _bs Alot"
(fill in the blanks). Always been a mystery to me how clowining juveniles could get so much airplay in the era of The Eagles, McCartney, Lennon, Harrison, Olivia Newton-John, BTO and so many other quality acts. Could this have been a prophesy of the lunacy yet to come: DISCO? ???

I have that 45 but I don't recall that B-side. But I am not at home right now. When I get home, I will check out my 45 to see what the b-side is. But I suspect that it is something else, because I don't recall the title that you gave. Was it possibly reissued with a different b-side?

I don't think that's what's on the B side of my "Hooked on a feeling", either. I have
somewhere a 1982 cassette with "Do ya like Boobs a lot", but I can't make that sound like Blue Swede in my mind no matter how hard I try.
It may be months before I run across my original 45. If that happened, it proabably was a reissue and some other artist on the B-side.

Little Children, by Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas was, back in the day, one of those innocent songs of the time, reminiscent of the sofa or loveseat being the center of the universe when teenage girls babysat. The minute the parents' car was outa the driveway, the Cokes and chips came out, and the boy came sneaking around from behind the bushes. LOL

Please check that 45-- I'll gladly stand corrected if I'm wrong. I no longer have my 45's. They're growing fur in my Mom's garage on the east coast. But something to consider-- my 1st experience screening "...Boobs Alot" was at a college radio station (we didn't play it). That 45 was a promo issue. Could have been a "combo", which occassionally happened on late '60s & early 70's radio station-issue promos. But, again, I could be wrong... :-[

Hey Tom W. & Firepoint-- I just Googled "Boobs", and you're both right. That novelty was done by 2 other groups, The Holy Modal Rounders & that potty-mouth underground sensation, The Fugs. In college radio, I probably screened the HMR version.

Good Call!
