670 KMZQ Becomes Another Las Vegas Sports Station

If you want to hear Sports Talk, Las Vegas is your market.

http://www.radioink.com/Article.asp?id=2620336&spid=24698

So now, you can hear:

670 KMZQ Yahoo Sports
920 KBAD Fox Sports
1100 KWWN ESPN
1140 KXST CBS Sports
1460 KENO ESPN Deportes

I wonder why KMZQ went with Yahoo? Why not join NBC Sports with its promise of a bigger investment in the format? I wonder about the long term future of Yahoo Sports, which clearly doesn't have the resources as ESPN/Disney, CBS, Fox or NBC. I doubt Yahoo can promise any big national games that those other networks will bid on and secure.

KMZQ tried Oldies/Classic Hits for a while (and still carries the Music call letters). Then they went Conservative Talk, but that format is dwindling and with KNXT-AM-FM, KDWN and KBET also in the format, there wasn't much left for 670. So now they're going Sports. Let's see how many sports fans decide they don't want to listen to ESPN, CBS or Fox and seek out KMZQ. Will one of Las Vegas many rim-shot FMs decide to give up music for NBC Sports?

You forgot 1400 KSHP with Sports Byline. And whatever time-brokered sports talk they're running, along with some on KDWN.

NBC Sports isn't 24/7 yet. On their website, they list KWWN and KBAD as affiliates.

670 probably won't have any more listeners with sports than with the other formats they've tried. Maybe they think they can sell in combo with their FM. One thing about running sports, it's turnkey if you're just going to run it 24/7, while with talk you have to worry about different networks, different satellite receivers, different format clock for each show.

I thought 720 AM Dumb would make a good sports station with their California signal. 670 does reach into AZ. Casinos have moved toward the CA and AZ markets with the Macao and Singapore casinos handling the Asian casinos. So a station with CA and AZ coverage will catch the cars coming and going to those places.
I wonder if they will carry the Dodgers???

670 AM was All 2nd and 3rd tier talkers and that boring NEWS??

I don't think it will change anything. I haven't even heard 1140's new format. Lotus ESPN AND FOX, will still kick butt. ;D

It's funny, I always hear guests from yahoo sports on FOX 920 and ESPN 1100. Also, at night FOX 920 flips over to CBS sports syndicated stuff.

Actually, FSR920 airs NBC Sports stuff, not CBS.

I guess I am a chump, and have all sorts of crazy ideas for other people to waste their money on ...but you would think one of these casino barons would buy a station and promote it as a sports gambling station and tie it into a hotel casino's market effort

... but maybe that is old school and things have moved to the internet.

There are FCC rules that restrict the types of gambling that can be advertised on the airways. Casinos on tribal land get a bit more slack because of provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. Hotel/Casinos on the strip wouldn't have that kind of protection.

Snip

My bad. Got my acronyms (ABC's) mixed up. HIHI!

Gee, 670 is on the Indian res. and I hear 660 window rock all the time. Could their be a connection? :p

On a more serious note, NASCAR seemed to go well. KDWN was out there.

I wouldn't be surprised if CBS wasn't the first to go sports on FM and flip their KXNT FM to CBS Sports, putting the talk back on only 840AM. While they are leading in the talk ratings, they are not getting the ratings jump they should for having an FM talk station.

That makes a lot of sense. CBS owns 10 FM Sports stations around the country but I don't know of any other FM Talk stations owned by CBS. 840 has a good signal, 50,000 watts by day, 25,000 watts by night, second only to KDWN. Fans of KXNT could easily go back to AM since 100.7 only started simulcasting the station a few years ago.

CBS already owns Sports station 1140 KXST, which runs the CBS Sports network. It could simply switch 100.7 to KXST-FM, program with mostly local hosts in the daytime, maybe clear Jim Rome middays and carry the network overnights and weekends. That's what CBS does in a lot of markets where it has both AM and FM Sports stations.

Of course, that would give Las Vegas FIVE Sports stations in English plus parttime KSHP plus Deportes KENO.
