6ABC to launch 4 PM newscast after Oprah Ends, FOX 29 gets Dr. OZ next season

It would be hard to argue there's another business move to be made under the circumstances.

Is Talk Dead? What's next?

In the past, when some talk show host stepped down or started to fade, there was always an heir apparent: Oprah knocked off Phil Donahue, for example. Now there's nobody waiting in the wings. There's a bunch of second-string shows that somehow seem to keep going but nobody at the level of Oprah, or Regis for that matter.

Maybe we are starting to see the beginning of the end of syndicated daytime talk. All the daytime staples have faded. Sitcome re-runs on network TV. Kids shows. Game shows. Soaps. Now talk. What will be the next big thing in daytime programming? They can't do local news all day, can they?

But a quarter century ago, Oprah was a gamble as well. Channel 6 started her at 10 am, a la Rachel Ray today. She caught fire, sure, but it wasn't as if she was clearly thought of as some "heir apparant." She had good timing as the variety-based show petered out, leaving an opening.

The end of daytime talk? Not yet. Just another stage. Some prime openings are gone on the big affiliates, but there are enough slots out there to keep the genre running even if the field winnows a bit.

Games still own the top two slots in syndication, and Millionaire and Feud have had decent runs as well. Kids shows naturally moved to cable and PBS. A much more logical fit.

this is going to be fun to watch and see who pulls out of the 4pm newscasts first

i say NBC10

It maybe that CBS3 just moves Dr.Phil to 4pm, and airs news at 5. Not sure if 3 or 10 will react first on a possible reschedule of the 4pm hour.

I wonder if CBS3 might be willing to move Dr. Phil to the 4PM hour and do news straight through from 5 to 6:30. For one thing, I'm not really a fan of FOX29's news at 5 and it'd be interesting to see a four-way news race...

As for a successor to Oprah, the only one seeming to be popular these days is Ellen Degeneres. I doubt Rachel Ray will work because of her previous notoriety with Food Network viewers, so who knows. And I think Kelly doesn't work without Regis...maybe...

What's the Rachael Ray notoriety with Food Network viewers?
Agree about Kelly. I'd think ABC has think about that slot too.

I could see Comcast NBC 10 moving Ellen to 4, but she maybe up against Dr. Phil on Ch.3, Dr. Oz or Judge Judy on Ch.29, and Action News at 4 on Ch.6, and might take a 4th place slot. It will be a tough competitive 4pm, all competing for a smaller audience, compared to the larger audience of 10 years ago. Oprah had the ability to pull numbers (by getting guests like Mrs. Jackson, George Bush, Sarah Palin etc., and being able to deal with domestic sometimes scandalous issues) also - I'm unsure if throwing Dr.Phil, Dr.Oz and Ellen simply at 4 will be able to collectively do the same.
