War Eagle Mountain is an old fire lookout site, roughly 25 miles NE of McCall. It is accessed via the Warren Wagon Road, a popular backcountry route that weaves through the Lick Creek Range and up into the remote mining villages of Secesh and Warren. No cell phone service along the whole way, unless you have the new T-Satellite service from T-Mobile and powered by Starlink to text out. The mountain itself is off a forest road that deteriorates about a mile in. It is not recommended for vehicles without high clearance (or ATVs)!! I decided to park the car in an open meadow and walked the rest of the way up, roughly 4 miles. Most of the land was burned in the '90s, there was a 500,000 acre wildfire in the Payette. There were also big wildfires in 2007. Mining claims are still being made along this ATV road and many others in the region. The AMAZING lookout manager said that you could take a bottle of dirt home and probably find gold flakes in it. I'm sure there are nuggets still waiting to be found out here.

The weather nearly ruined the hike. Dark clouds loomed over the whole way, and I heard thunder. Some light sprinkles near the summit, but they faded away. The manager said that lightning did not hit the ground anywhere nearby.
Strange bandscan. Lots of Montana and north Idaho reception from the top. Very, very little from Boise, all weak if that. Except for KDBI and KRRB (transmitter in Oregon), which were blistering strong. Hiking up the road, only a handful of FMs made it from McCall, all weak, as well as bits of Grangeville 90.9 and Kuna 88.1, and KPDA 100.7.
