9 kHz AM Frequency of the Week - 693 kHz

Sometimes I will get JOAB 693 Tokyo (NHK-2) at sunrise, from here in Western Washington. Distance is 4800+ miles, but it is a VERY common trans-pacific station here.

Used to hear the heterodynes from the BBC transmitters on 693 a couple of winters ago, however, never heard audio on the signal as it was barely above the noise threshold. Heard audio on 1134 from Croatia, 1314 from Norway and 747 from the Netherlands but never from the UK. Now that 690 is back on the air from Montreal it is much harder to hear what may be on 693 (this is from the NW suburbs of Chicago using a 'barefoot' Sony ICF-7600GR)

I stand to be corrected, but I think the BBC has turned off their 693 blowtorch outside of London, and migrated that programming to FM.

cyberdad, just checked...unless the beeb's website isn't up to date, Brookmans Park may be still on 693 as well as Droitwich:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/transmitters/radio/medium_long_wave.shtml

Brookmans Park is less than 20 miles north of central London. Maybe someone can dial in on a "Global Tuners" site to check (?)
4 Towers on the site, but they also have 909 kHz at Brookmans, so perhaps 2 towers each frequency, directional (?)

MW List is not showing BBC on 693 at Brookmans Park, but is showing 909 Brookmans Park as active. Droitwich is supposedly on air.
MW List says "Mast A" for Droitwich, so that may be an omni aerial... http://www.mwlist.org/mwlist_quick_and_easy.php?area=1&kHz=693 150kW omnidirectional signal making it 'over the pond', from 75 miles inland. Maybe?

Thanks stormy/neighbor. As posted previously, our daughter is married to a Brit and has lived in London. Last time I was over there about a year and a half ago, I didn't have much time with the radio, but I seem to remember them off. However, I might be thinking of the world service transmitter on 648. I'm almost positive that's been taken off.

FWIW, what definitely was still on was BBC radio 4 on 720. But that's less than a killowatt.

From Perth, Australia, a regular in the evenings (~1500 UTC) is Bangladesh Betar, a million watts at 4,200 miles NW of here. Otherwise it's a mix of ABC from South Australia, 3AW Newstalk from Melbourne and probably other Aussies.
