90.5 Goes Multicast: Altrok 90.5 HD2 and Brookdale Student Radio 90.5 HD3

At about 3:10 Eastern Time this afternoon, Altrok 90.5 HD2 and Brookdale Student Radio 90.5 HD3 went ON THE AIR, transmitting on a digital signal that piggybacks on 90.5 The Night's FM signal, all of which emanates from its tower in Lincroft, NJ.

Altrok's first song, funnily enough: The Dream Syndicate's "Tell Me When It's Over". With that, Modern Rock returns to the Jersey Shore.

Zune HD locked in.......Picking it up good! Congrats on the HD launch and it's a good alternative for the rockers here. Hopefully the same will come for a dance format.

When 'BJB went jazz years ago, it was because 'HTG had taken the "alternative" format that 'BJB had previously. I wondered if since 'HTG was "HIT 106" that 'BJB would find a way to break those albums nobody else would play.
...ahhh, the day of the Residents back to back with Bill Monroe and Chuck (and his mange) Mangione is back? :D

We shall see.

Good detail, Jeff - I came on the scene in 1985, (I think) after 'BJB settled on its then-current format. Then I stayed in Monmouth County for the rest of my life.

Altrok 90.5 HD2 is a bit more focused on classic and current Modern Rock - kind of 2010's answer to "Rock Of The 80's" with a strong "College Rock" lean - than the 'HTG of the 80's was. Of course, the 'HTG of the 80's didn't have the luxury of nearly forty years of alarming and vaguely disconcerting heritage alternative tracks to draw from, so there's a bit less reliance on high weirdness from the 60's and 70's (not that it's entirely missing, mind you.) The term "deep alternative" is being thrown around, and that sounds like a fit for what I'm doing.

And yes, we shall see. I'm excited, but reality often has a way of intruding on that...but for the moment, the HD Radio here in western Freehold is locked into the signal from Lincroft, and there's stuff to do...

The rock format that 'HTG took was a combination of clubs and 'BJB. And the "freeform" of the old WNEW-FM. Segueways were a big thing. After we switched, the production room was turned into a secondary studios for "not ready for prime time" students of broadcasting to get their feet wet. The program was heard only in "The Pub" across the hall.

As I've been thinking that this may be the way the HD-x's go, especially for Colleges. Instead of an intercom system, such as we had to "The Pub", or the carrier current systems, the HD-x's are the next step - internet notwithstanding.

Jeff, that's exactly right - HD3 is where Brookdale students are doing their thing, which I think is spectacularly important. Now you don't have to be in The Pub to get your friends to listen, you've just got to convince them an HD Radio's a good idea. (Did I mention $34.99 for a refurb at Overstock.com? ;) )

Life in Monmouth County's actually kinda nice, in my opinion...but I think I've gotten lucky with a very good neighborhood.

Ah, the segue...I love a good segue, and I get the chance to do 'em as perfectly as possible on my FM/HD1 show every Friday night, since I produce in advance using Sony Acid; granted, it's difficult to play an digital file at the wrong speed. But I've found that an automated station, if you've chosen the library well and introduce the right amounts of randomness, can pleasantly surprise you with a good segue (which, when you actually run the station, is a lot like being able to tickle yourself.)

I'd add WPIX's eighteen months as a New Wave-philic rocker and the early days of WLIR's modern rock format as influences as well. John Peel also - I was a regular listener via the Internet when he passed away in 2004, and he plugged shows on my behalf (via BBC Radio One!) in Asbury Park on a couple of occasions (and one or two people showed!) If we can work out the logistics, there will be a John Peel Day on Altrok this October...

Better yet, Zune HD has it all even a built in WiFi to stream internet radio. And Zune also has apps to download.

Actually, did you get the stream to work on Zune HD? I suspect the AAC isn't an option; how about the MP3 one?
