91X and 94.9 have surpassed Rock 105.3 for the first time in a long time

I'm legit happy for the alt stations, especially 91X. They haven't changed much of their playlists (besides maybe 91X returning some songs here and there as well as adding a bunch of new stuff), but I noticed Rock 105.3 lacks in playing a lot of currents and are a bit repetitive in playlist. Maybe that could be a factor of the drop.

Here's all three stations from April to July 2024

The demographic rankings from Research Director for San Diego are due out tomorrow. Let's see how your analysis holds up when we're not looking at just the 6+ numbers, okay?

And for those who prefer not to wade through the excess verbiage on the Research Director blog, here's the simplified list, the way I post it on the L.A. and S.F. boards:

25-54:
#1 KXSN
#2 KMYI
#3t XHRM
#3t KLNV
#5 XTRA
#6 KIOZ
(for some reason, they did not mention #7 & #8 this month)
#9t KWFN
#9t KYXY

18-34:
#1 XTRA
#2t XHRM
#2t KMYI
#4t KHTS
#4t XHTZ
#4t KBZT
#4t KPBS
#8t KXSN
#8t KWFN
#8t KGB-FM

18-49:
#1 KMYI
#2 KXSN
#3 XHRM
#4 KLNV
#5t KIOZ
#5t XTRA

Rock 105.3 has a strange format to me. They are considered active rock, but they seem to lean alternative quite a bit (probably because iHeart doesn't have a true alternative presence in San Diego) . I hear 21 Pilots and Eminem on there, which might appeal to their audience, but I would not consider either to be active rock. Much of the rest of the playlist is made up of artists that transcend both alternative and active rock (Foo Fighters, Sublime, Offspring) along with a few classic hard rock artists. I guess active rock is about 75% alternative or alternative-adjacent artists at this point because I'm not sure where the rest of the musical pool would be pulled from.

Looks like the real data makes his analysis look better - interesting that SD can support not one but two alternative stations so well. I’ve long wondered if the success of KITS would prompt another person to make another alternative format flip eventually in SF, and im still on the fence about that.

(PS: thanks so much for how you post this, it’s been tremendously helpful to not deal with the long winded paragraphs!)

My pleasure. I am motivated to do so because it improves the quality of the discussion. I imagine there are many others who despair at trying to find the actual data within all of the explanatory verbiage!

Speaking of Bay Area alternative, the 92.3 days of Channel under Michael Solari as MD were stellar. They would be the 91X to SD's 94.9 in this scenario. Problem is, you'd be a startup, and with KEXP now in the market, I'm just not sure there's room for a more new-music forward competitor to Live 105 on the commercial side.
