93.3 WMMR'S audio and wishing there was a trip hop/ shoegaze format

Couple of different things in this post. Last night, listening to WMMR's Back to School A-Z, I caught a long time favourite song of mine "No Rain" by Blind Melon. While singing along to it, it truly dawned on me that WMMR's audio is impeccable. What processing are they using? It just pumps the snare drum and really gives all their songs a similar sound. It's some of the best audio I have heard on a station.

Also- today is Pandora's AD-FREE day. I am listening to my Shoegaze station, and am wondering why a trip hop/ shoegaze format would not work. Lots of people love this genre, and I think a few niche stations around the country could easily pull it off. Around the Delaware Valley- A real open frequency is 92.9 and 95.3 I think if you put a 1kW on 95.3 based in Roxborough with a small staff and a wide selection of vinyl and CD's playing 80's to today's shoegaze/ indie/ trip hop, it could really work. It will never bill high, but it can have a STRONG cult like following.

If I only had the money........

I think, honestly, you're talking way too narrow a format for commercial success in a small area. That's where Pandora (et al) and satellite (to a degree) come in. Sure, there's plenty of people who might enjoy the music, but not enough in a given area to reach critical mass. I happen to know a lot of people who like First Wave on XM, but I'm not extrapolating that to mean such a format would generally work on a widescale basis. (Not to say there aren't unique exceptions, but as a general principle.)

Of course, that small staff would, presumably, want to get paid. And the costs of the physical plant aren't insignifcant. Which makes such a narrow format in a start-up scenario a tough hill to climb.

Totally agreed Bob, which is why I said if only I had the money. I know it would never work seeing as how it is such a small (or narrow) format, but one can dream. Now...it could be thrown in into a 90's alternative rock format (kinda like AAA, or even possibly a late 70's-80's rock station.) But then again, this is me talking, and I really love the college stations like 91.7 WKDU, and those guys don't need to bother with ratings and so on, hence why they can play ANYTHING.

It does get under my skin that these stations, which I feel are doing radio the right way by playing odd, indie stuff, could not (or just barley) work in the commercial market. If they could, they could have great audio, full market signals like 8kW-15kW.
