93.5 & 102.3 merge, one rock station remains in Cola

No-brainer here....and more proof that alternative isn't what it's cracked up to be.

I wouldn't say this really has much of anything to do with Alternative itself. Even 93.5 was not an alternative station. They played some alternative, but also played a fair amount of active rock and even some more mainstream things like Aerosmith. I would have considered it to be a "mainstream" rock station focusing on newer rock. If I'm correct, I don't think they played things like Lorde, but would play things like Imagine Dragons. And then everything from Metallica to Pearl Jam. Just like 93.3 The Planet used to call themselves "New Rock" but they weren't an Alternative station (Granted 93.5 was a much better station that encompassed a broader playlist than The Planet, where it has to blast your ears off to be considered).

I don't know the numbers but even here in Greenville BOTH The Planet and Classic Rock 101.1 have been struggling. Neither are anything but alternative. And I think they need to do the same thing here -- merge the stations. I think rock as a whole has been struggling, particularly as the target for what is "classic" rock continues to move as the population ages.

On the other hand, I would actually argue that alternative is too hot right now to the point where it may be starting to hurt alternative rock stations themeslves. There's a ton of crossover with CHR and Hot AC right now (starting with Fun. then Imagine Dragons, Capital Cities, Bastille, Lorde, etc.). It's almost impossible to escape. The lulll in the late 90s and early 2000s when Active rock began to take over Alternative playlists is gone. But alternative stations still need to blend those crossover bands with truly indie alternative bands (even things like dubstep ...afterall Alternative is really supposed to be a genre that crosses boundries and is off the beaten path). if they want to survive without going back to Active. Just my two cents.

I missed recording this station online due to a recent fire. Does anyone have an aircheck of Rock 93.5? Please let me know.

AAA-based WXRY was a well-programmed, vibrant LPFM station when I last visited Columbia a few years ago. I wonder how they will benefit from the changes.

Looking just at their site (http://www.wxryfm.org/), it seems better-maintained than the sites of some commercial stations I have seen.
