It all transpired at 720 this morning......"The Breakfast Boys" & Molly Allen kicked off the "All New 92-9 ZZU" They are doing the morning-wake-up duties. For about the first time since I can recall---it's no longer known as 93ZOO-FM. They are going directly after KCDA 103.1 The only difference musically---not hearing alot of 80's stuff like KCDA plays and 92-9 Z-Z-U does not back announce the artist and title of songs. Apparently no one has lost a job----so I've heard. Will update more when available....... <P ID="signature">______________

Now..call me silly...but does one usually blow up the number one station in the market?

Well with KEZE getting "Wired", this move was bound to happen. Plus this might give 96.9 a good advantage a la KUBE/Seattle.

BTW Billboard Radio Monitor just dropped KZZU from the Mainstream Top 40 panel today(October 17th).

This is what their main page says "92.9 ZZU is a new radio station that plays all your favorite Modern Hit Music. You don't have to sit through 50 Cent to get to Nickelback. You don't have to sit through "Mickey" to hear great music like Kelly Clarkson, Green Day and the Goo Goo Dolls."

Isn't that exactly what MIX is doing in Seattle?! One of MIX's sweepers says "MIX 92-5, where you dont have to sit through rough rap songs or stale oldies to get what you wanna hear" or something like that. I wonder if it will work in Spokane with one Rythmic CHR and one Hot AC/CHR hybrid...Why wouldn't they just push KZZU more rhythmic and KEZE more CHR instead of flipping the two?!

92.9...about time they mentioned their digital dial position...

I remember when it was KREM-FM briefly many moons ago. I think it became KZZU in the mid '80s....

Looks like KXLY is revamping their kid offerings, making KZZU less hip-hop centered and more pop-rock and putting the hip-hop on 96.9 (hope they keep the KEZE calls on 96.9. A perfect tribute call for a legendary gangsta rapper, Eazy-E.)

KREM-FM was around for at least four years, and I think it was significantly longer than that. It was under these call letters with an established album rock format when I started at WSU in the Fall of 1980, and flipped to KZZU and Top 40 shortly after I graduated in 1984.

Personally I'm surprised they didn't make a move like this quite awhile ago. KZZU has 100kw and a great signal at 92.9-----while KEZE(The Former Star now wired)is just 6kw. I would have put what 93ZOOFM was doing on 96.9 a long time ago, and pretty much do what 92-9/KZZU is doing now. It is confusing to listeners who are used to what a station is doing and then they pull the rug out from under their listeners. For the "Breakfast Boys" to have left the Zoo, finally get established on Star and then to only go back again.....seems a little odd......

"93ZOOFM" did good in the 12+ showing, but was not performing very well at all in the money demo 25-54. They did great with teens---especially after Citadel handed the younger demos over with the killing off of WILD103-9. Team that up with the fact that the new move-in from Newport was going to do an Urban format called "Wired,"---and indeed may still do that format and identifier----- that is what the catalyst that made the change you are hearing now.

In listening today for a bit mid-days during the noon hour.....they played Keith Urban "You'll Think of Me," then I swear played a recorded drop then went into about 10 minutes of back to back non-stop commercials. Then they played 2 songs, then another recorded drop into yet another stop set. Can't see that making for great TSL. But it was just the first day and since I've put new stations on the air, I know how much fun those first days are!

Their imaging sounds good, but it sounds like they are going right after 103.1 KCDA. Interesting to see how this dog fight winds up. And how well a rap/urban format will go in Spokane. Wild 103-9 didn't make it---big problems were the station's image in the community and a parent company(including a GM) that refused to get behind their own station--believe in the format and sell it. Wild 103-9's image was tarnished big time when there was some kind of shooting at one of their events....not a good memory maker in listeners minds.

Anywho....there's the latest from ol' Spokaloo.......

There must have been something about KZZU in the 80's that got me to listen. The Breakfast Boys were new, and at least from 83-86 or so there were interesting songs being produced. (Remember when the Breakfast Boys were kicked off the air and replaced by the cheap imitation "The Breakfast Guys"? I always thought that the goal of having the Breakfast Guys was to make the show so bad that people would listen, until the Breakfast Boys showed up again.)

Muddling through different songs is what makes Jack work -- the anticipation that something different will show up. I love Green Day but just can't sit through Boulevard of Broken Dreams again. At what point will a station like ZZU say, "Enough Already"?

I just couldn't get excited over this as a music fan -- three stations playing essentially the same song lists. Outside of the place on the dial, what differentiates 92.9, 96.5 and 103.1? And are people in Spokane too cheap to consider satellite? Perhaps they are too smart to consider it? Nah!!!

I think you have the impression that ZZU is another jack-esque clone...and it is not. It's a hot ac...plain and simple. Same with KCDA. Except that ZZU has actual jocks on it and 'CDA doesn't bother.

You mean 96.5 Seattle?

Aside from KYRS-LP, Spokane radio notoriously plays follow the leader somewhere else. I haven't heard a commercial station there that really reflects Spokane life or plays any locally made music in Spokane. Many voices on Spokane radio are voicetracked elsewhere.

Spokane radio is rarely edgy, most radio there plays it safe, sticking to such typical Spokane formats as Classic Rock, Country, Religion or AC and now, a random mix of radio hits like JACK (er...BOB in Spokane's case.) But I'll admit in the last few years, KYRS-LP, Air America and now the hip-hop war that's-a-brewing on Spokane radio are the most exciting things to happen over there since Z-Rock (I think I remember one Snoop Dogg song where he even talks about Spokane...not sure which album it was on.....)

Keep your ears to the east.....

Just some thoughts...

Besides the call letters, I wonder if this was done in reference to WSU (waZZU) -- and the ZZU CRU students section.

Also, any reasons why the KXLY group are revamping their image. First KXLY4 changes their logo, then the ESPN 700 move, then Wired 96.9 and now 92.9 ZZU.
I'm really hoping they change their logos for the last two, they're pretty plain looking. Although, even the polished KXLY4 logo looks awful!

later..

I'm thinking the letters don't have anything to do with WSU...KZZU doesn't have a great signal in Pullman...as in no chance of reception in any building and most cars.

And I agree, the logos suck. look like they were done by a 7th grader in 1992...

Ummm...larry? I only know of one station in Spokane that uses out of market Jocks...that being 101.9 Spirit FM. And maybe one or two of the CC stations use an out of market morning show...so unless you have something to back up your statement there...

I do.

Either it's voicetracking or the power of prayer that gets him to Spokane within seconds....
