95.1 FM -- LP FM, Rice Radio, or Beaumont rimshot?

If the new LP FMs open up, 95.1 would be a great frequency. I think it is the only frequency left in Houston that is not first or second adjacent to another frequency. What other frequencies would work well for low power FM here in Houston?

How about Rice apply to resurrect KTRU as a LP FM serving the campus area at 95.1? That would be close to the original power that KTRU had before the upgrade to make way for 92.1 to increase in power

Or, I have often wondered why 95.1 from Beaumont/Port Arthur hasn't tried to move their transmitter into Winnie or Devers like so many of the other Beaumont stations. I think there would be room for 95.1 to move in as a rimshot from the East. Seems like half of the Beaumont market stations have already done so.

Just my musings about what seems to be the most open spot on the Houston FM dial.

Not gonna happen in Houston LPFM is not gonna happen any time soon one of the big radio support groups is fighting LPFM with everything they have

94.9 and 95.3 are second adjacents that would work, and nothing nearby that is co-channel. Other possibilities would depend on distance requirements, and would be affected when tropo kicks up.

The KTRU programming style would fit the LPFM model. Of course they would have go up against a zillion other applicants for open frequencies.

Because KNDE in B/CS is in the way.

would a transmitter in Chambers or Liberty counties really be too close to the transmitters in Bryan/College Station/ Brazos Valley area?

Yes it would, if you're talking about such a move resulting in any meaningful coverage of even the far eastern part of the Houston area. Even if the distance requirement was met, the power of the station would have be considerably reduced to protect the KNDE service area. Specifically, since KNDE is a Class C2 (50,000 watts max with 500 foot antenna or equivalent) the most KYKR could do would be to downgrade from a Class C1 to C2 but even at that, the distance between the stations would be too short (by at least 10-15 miles, maybe more). So there's really no way it could work, even if KNDE were to move further northwest to accommodate the relocation of KYKR, since a Class C2 from the Devers area would have virtually no impact in the Houston area.

It appears to me that some folks want to try to make Rice keep a station they don't want.
Rice is selling their radio station because they don't want it anymore. It seems that if they were going to go out and spend the money putting an LP on the air, they would just spend that cash improving what they already have.

I look forward to when there is a station every 0.2 MHz. That day is coming sooner than you think.
