97.1 The River promotes crime, drug use, destruction of hotels

I heard a somewhat funny promo this morning on 97.1 The River. But those who are not as intelligent enought to enjoy the humor might find another message.

It said something to the effect of "At the new 97.1 The River, we like our artists with a criminal history" (one song plays, I think the Rolling Stones), "destroying hotel rooms" (another song), and "making life better..through the use of chemicals" (obvious reference to drugs...the song that followed Paul McCartney song "Love or Let Die"). I only heard it once...so don't quote anyone.

True Oldies 106.7 must really be getting to them. I assume they are going after the hardcore classic rock fans with this promo. But on the other hand...it would look to some as if the River was promoting irresponsible behavior.

Good promo...or not?

It sounds like Jeff McHugh, the creative new PD of B98.5 and The River, who must be frustrated with the scripted formats of the 2 stations, got to do something.

They can cut all the new promos they want and it won't help them grab new listeners when they insist on playing "American Pie," "Magic Man," and the same three Bad Company songs EVERY SINGLE DAY. DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY...

Odd...River had built their brand on being an equally anodyne alternative to B98.5. I'd expect a promo like this from the old 96 Rock or the pre-Quality(sic) Rock Rock100.5.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it promotes bad behavior (no nanny-stating here), but it doesn't really fit the station's image at all.

I could see them trying to differentiate themselves from True Oldies (which skews old CHR vs. AOR), but they should let the music do the talking and emphasize AOR more to differentiate themselves.

They burn out Badfinger, too?

Does it really matter since the listeners are 35+ adults for the most parts? I mean really?

Listen to what A12-34 stations are playing these days.

For the most part the River needs an image before it can change it. The artists that they play set the precedent starting 40 years or so ago anyways, so come on, tune into The Fish then.....

In my opinion, The River 97.1 is running scared of WYAY-FM True Oldies 106.7!!!! They are making alot of mistakes!
