98.7 AMP RADIO NEED TO STAY ON THE AIR BECAUSE CHANNEL 955 NEEDS COMPETITION

Re: We would not have 98.7 AMP RADIO here in DETROIT had 93-1 DRQ made it to today

Had 93-1 DRQ or 93.1 WDRQ still been airing a Top 40 format in October of 2009 98.7 would have become another format other than Top 40 like rock music as 98.7 DETROIT WHEELZ.

98.7 AMP RADIO sounds way better than 93-1 DRQ did, and I'm glad 93.1 DRQ Top 40 format left so it gave CBS Radio a chance to launch their own top 40 station 4 years later here in DETROIT.

CBS RADIO is doing a better job with their Top 40 format here in DETROIT than ABC RADIO did with DETROIT's #1 HIT MUSIC STATION 93-1 DRQ now 93.1 DOUG FM.

I have to disagree big time 93.1 DRQ was a kick ass top 40 station!
Ill take 93.1 DRQ over 98.7 Amp radio any day!
Now don't get me wrong I do turn on 98.7 Amp radio form time to time!
But 98.7 Amp is no where near as good of a chr station as 93.1DRQ!

I agree with Steve. DRQ was, is, and forever will be, better than AMP by a longshot. A SERIOUS LONGSHOT! DRQ did what no other CHR station done, rather what no other CHR will ever do.

WDRQ didn't flip to Doug due to Channel 955, they flipped in order to block CBS from flipping V98.7 or WOMC to Jack FM :) In the long run, it seems to have paid off...
That makes sense but 93.1 DRQ was 2.2 in the Detroit rating's before ABC/Disney flip'ed WDRQ to Doug fm. I thinking that's was motivated ABC/Disney to place Doug fm on 93.1 also!
I Agree with you Steve.
But I think that is also a sign that 93.1 DRQ was not very well programmed in 2005 by ABC RADIO before the switch to DOUG FM to have got a 2.2 share in ratings. 98.7 AMP ratings has always been decent or fair and was recently at a low 2.8 share in April 2012 but still had a high cume.

98.7 AMP RADIO would be just like 102.5 WIOG up north in Saginaw if they did not play J. Cole and Drake. 102.5 WIOG can be heard in the far north suburbs of DETROIT and north of Waterford and Pontiac in northern Oakland County toward the city of Flint.

The spread of Amp continues...CBS is blowing up Boston's WODS Oldies 103 to create Amp 103.3 at noon tomorrow.
Anyone know if all the Amps share a playlist or not?

CBS co-owns the Hot AC there. So they might give Kiss a good run there since Kiss and their sister dance station Jammin 94.5 are co-owned and nobody else has given CHR a shot in that market for years.

Let me be the first to say I stand corrected on this earlier post:

Until then, until AMP sorts itself out with all the turnover its on-air staff is going through, there is no legit battle, nor should there be a comparison between this battle and the battle with DRQ and 9-5-5. It may or may not get intense as the summer wages on, but only time will tell on that one.

As it stands, AMP (3.5) is LITERALLY behind 9-5-5 (3.6) in the latest ratings. Whatever AMP is doing to get to this point is working for them, but for how long will this last, and what are they gonna do about the rest of their on-air staff? The June ratings are not that far from being released, so only time will tell if they keep this up, if they actually surpass 9-5-5 in the next ratings period.

Regardless of what the reason was that DRQ was flipped in '05, we can all agree it was one hell of a good station. I, for one, was a loyal listener since 2002 when I accidentally stumbled to that station. I didn't like it at first, but it grew on me, and I loved it ever since.

I still believe that this current AMP vs. 9-5-5 battle will not be like DRQ vs. Q95, but it's nice to see something reminiscent of it ;)

I absolutely LOVE these airchecks. I can listen to these again and again. Great memories. Actually, though, these airchecks are from when the station first debuted as a Rhythmic AC back in '96. There was some CHR product here, but the CHR songs were balanced quite well with Rhythmic Oldies and '80s/'90s dance tunes.

I miss WDRQ so much. Especially in the '96-'97 time period. No station in Detroit's history will ever come close to how amazing they were at that time.

Thank's. We all know that Detroit love's Hip Hop and Channel 955 was playing a crap load Hip Hop!
Many Metro Detroit Hip Hop listeners were turning to Channel 955 instead of 93.1DRQ to get that Hip Hop fix!

Matt Hollidaye On Air damn straight DRQ was the SH**! I kept turning to DRQ from 1999 to 2005 the 6 best years of radio I ever heard! :) :) These days radio sometime's feel's empty because of DRQ!

Sometimes I can pick up 102.5 WIOG down here in western Wayne County near Dearborn Heights, Michigan to the southwest of the city of DETROIT, MI.

Wow! 102.5 WIOG definitely has a blow torch signal!
Almost 100,000 watts!

There's a Facebook page dedicated to WIOG's predecessor on the 102.5 frequency, beautiful music station WGER (which moved to 106.3 in the 1986 frequency swap and eventually became today's Mix 106.3). On that page is an image of a map of lower Michigan indicating all the cities from which listeners had requested taped copies of a motivational speaker who was heard on the station. Requests came from as far north as Petoskey and Onaway and all the way out to Grand Rapids, and oh yes, there were more than a few in the Detroit area too. 102.5 has always been a blowtorch.
