98.7 The Fan Signs On At 12 Noon

Frank Ferreri said:
The positive is that it is local around the clock. Can't really relate to the Fox network stuff on DAE. The negative is that a successful sports talk station MUST have play by play rights to a major league team in the market.

That thinking is changing throughout the industry. This format can make money with or without PBP. Having said that, it takes time, you just have to wait for contracts to expire.

Couple guys on the weekend were as uninspiring as can be imagined. Gee, let's get on the radio and talk.

They will be gone when CBS launches their national network in January.

I thought many of the regulars heard during the week did extra weekend airshifts when the station first launched. Also, it helps to store your "bullpen" in the case talent takes vacation time.

It is pretty obvious why they have "teams" of hosts as opposed to individual hosts. A talk program, especially sports, generates more interest as an interaction between the humans. There are not enough consistent callers for a one-host 3 hour 5-day a week (1-3-5) local show.

The few that are able to do a quality 1-3-5 talk show, get paid the big bucks.

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

Is this really true? I have heard guys that I thought sounded really good, and then they disappear or they aren't even on during the week, much less making big bucks. Bobby Fenton is one solo show that I have enjoyed. Krazniqi is another. They are better than a lot of what is on full time.

It doesn't seem as simple as you make it seem.

Tampa used to have a well-known 1-3-5 sports host in morning drive... Then, this happened.

Not sure if serious. Sileo, really?

I wasn't really referring to Sileo in my earlier post. That show was simply obnoxious, and isn't missed. Since we're on that topic though, the current replacement is merely "meh".

Sileo was horrible, just horrible. I haven't heard any host yet in the last decade plus I have been listening to local radio make me want to turn a dial faster than listening to Sileo. What a tool. So far, IMO, the 620 morning show (6-9) and the 98.7 morning show are a toss up. Ron and Ian I find are superb in small doses, like that 20 minute drive to work but for the full 3 hours, they repeat what they say more often than Jim Rome does nowadays. Speaking of Rome, I find myself switching from 620 to 98.7 for at least those 2 hours, 12-2, to listen to the Commish and Gary.

To sum it up, my main listening time is from 1030-5 pm. I start with Ron and Ian but I switch to the Commish at noon, if not earlier. I then switch back to Deumig, unless he is talking point-spreads all damn day like today, then I switch back to 98.7

And this is from someone who didn't change the dial from 620 for about the last decade. Things changed when 620 let Whitney Johnson and Jerry Peatuck and others take a walk.
