98.7 The Peak may flip to it to simulcast one of their AM's

The Peak 98.7 in Phoenix may flip to it to simulcast one of their AM's
much like they did in DC and SLC.

If is happen in Phoenix would open up the door on CBS Radio to being a Jack FM here.

"Never say never" but with the Peak being Bonneville's Phoenix cash cow, that might not be a great move. An FM simulcast of KTAR, however, would be great.

It is a waste to put these full-signaled AM talk stations on FM. Clear Channel just effectively did this in Minneapolis, however they did it because they didn't have a strong AM to put a N/T station on.

The rationale makes sense, with competition from satellite radio, but it seems like a total waste of a perfectly good FM signal that could be playing music.

Why does everybody think Phoenix needs a Jack FM??? It doesn't. Not every market does, just like not every market needs talk on FM. The Peak is the Phoenix version of a Jack anyways.

For me it isn't that the signal should have music on it is the content of what is on the dial. If they were to just take KTAR as it stands today and simulcast it on 98.7 then that would be a waste. They really need to look at this station and revamp it before they simulcast it on the fm.

It would be a bad business decision to flip The Peak. As said before the Peak is carrying the cluster right now. Bonneville will purchase another FM in the market before they flip The Peak to simulcast their AM.

I think your comments are exactly right. Other speculation has no plausibility.

Put down the pipe.....no way Bonneville is going to flip their most successful and top billing station. When they did the FM flips in DC and SLC it was with underperforming FM's.

I see Bonneville going the route they did in SLC and acquiring another FM to pair with one of the AM's. Unless Gumpdusky is willing to bail I cant see them picking up one of the C-3 boomers. (CBS radio seems less likely seeing all the effort they went thru to flip KZON to FreeFM.)

Bonneville changed news talk to an FM in DC because the AM did not cover a large part of the market. There is no such reasoning to be had in Phoenix.

And, in my opinion, it's much better and more localized than the "Jack" stations. We are lucky to have The Peak in our market.

I have heard some Bonneville suits repeating the mantra that 35 year olds don't listen to AM, so we need to put our news products on FM.

I haven't seen any research that supports the position, but they've made a very public push to find ways to market news to younger listeners.

Anyway, I don't see them sacrificing a cash cow like The Peak just to have KTAR-FM, but I wouldn't be shocked to see them spend some cash to add another FM to the stable. <P ID="signature">______________

How about 35 year olds don't listen to news period.

Re: No reason to flip KTAR to FM

Bonneville did the same thing in SLC, turning a HotAC/Variety Rock station off the air and pushing the news/talk to FM as well. The AM was already the number 1 in the market but same reason was given publiclly, to be able to reach younger audience and also better signal coverage.

The peak maybe a decent cash cow, but so is KTAR, and with many variations of rock stations already flooding the market, it wouldnt surprise me one bit if they made this move.
