A Bit South of Market: WWON in the Radio-Info Spotlight

Major props, Lash! Proves you can do anything you dream you can. A huge lesson learned for me.
Way to go!

Thanks guys! Special thanks to Phyllis Stark for writing it.

We're just having fun, and trying to do radio the right way.

That's a nice article. I agree with you 100% about radio needing to be local. I also still believe you can play music on AM if you have the right elements between the music, like local news information, sports, and weather. Congrats Lash and good luck!

Chris,

We've corresponded a few times in the past..

Great article. AM radio CAN be done, but it takes a special breed to do it. I wish WWON was closer to me,
because you have the kind of station and team I can believe in..not too many of those left!

Congrats to you and Karen and continued best wishes!

Alan

Yes, congratulations on a successful station and good press. Small town AM radio can be done. During my days in Centerville, we covered Hickman County Bulldogs sports. Small town radio, what a blast. Local high school games, Swap & Shop, funeral notices...those were the days. Keep up the great work and continued success.

Chris, you've been waiting for years for a radio station that would give you truly free rein to create the kind of radio you believed in. And the few that did reaped all the benefits and took the credit.

Good job. I haven't yet heard your station, but I don't think I need to. I know what your brand of radio is and I can picture it in my mind right now. Let me know when you get your website back online.

Ken....thanks! Michael J. Daniels moved south. Are you ready to get into your own small market situation out of the snow in the northeast?

I'm meeting with another AM owner south of Nashville on Saturday. Lets see if I can get this deal together.

New 930 The Farm website and streaming coming soon!

This is what small town (NOT SMALL MARKET) radio should sound like. Ladies and Gentlemen, there is a MAJOR difference between "Small Market" and "Small Town" Radio.

Example: Clarksville, Cookeville, Jackson, etc. is considered SMALL MARKET.

Waynesboro, where WWON is the only station in the town & county, &
is SMALL TOWN RADIO, NOT SMALL MARKET. Chris has nobody to compete with.

RATINGS don't mean a damn thing in SMALL TOWN radio. You go out in the commuity, meet the community leaders, speak to your Owners & Managers of the businesses in the area. This give you a good idea of the target demo. Owners of SMALL TOWN stations should tell Arbitron to go to hell! We conduct our on survey's here!

I have found, as far as music is concerned in some SMALL TOWN stations, it really doesn't matter what you play, it HOW MUCH LOCAL PROGRAMMING you do, such as a local morning show from a popular "mom & pop" restaurnat is great, where the mayor, city council officals, the local police chief, etc can be on the show to inform the community of what is going on in town. Another program for coaches, some teachers from the schools, school board officials, etc. is a great idea.

THAT IS SMALL TOWN RADIO....PERIOD! And this is what the businesses want.
Chris has done his homework, collected surverys, etc. The former owner didn't have time to do this because his interest lied somewhere else, like other SMALL MARKET owners that own other stations that serve larger areas and the little SMALL TOWN AM STATION is just a write off for them.

This my friends should tell you that corporate out of LA, San Antonio, Chicago, New Youk, etc, has no business owning a station in a little town like Waynesboro. The owner must live there, be a part of the community, and know what's going on!

All you music people can argue with me all day long, but this is the way SMALL TOWN, (not small market) radio should be done.

I'm with you Scott....Amen Brother!

And correct about the surveys. Did our own research here 100% locally before the launch.

Phones are ringing off the hook, and we've doubled our weekly sales goals. Picked up Sonic and McDonalds both yesterday.

Chris,

Many years ago, the famous John R. of WLAC said it’s not the ratings that make the station’s format or program, but it’s the SALES that are made. This is true today!
Unfortunately, in my situation, I’m a station in a suburban area of Nashville, with a signal that really doesn’t get into Nashville, but some of these folks on this board got so upset when WRQQ changed format and let go of Coyote and Kathy , they were calling me saying you need to take WRQQ’s place. Now that’s stupid as hell! First of all, I’m not a “Nashville Station”, and two, the observations I saw made by Cumulus on their change of WRQQ, and third, my station is just a 1000 watt daytimer.
The change for WRQQ was because of one major reason, SALES! It was costing more to pay the morning crew, in addition, maintaining that format, because of the sales were not coming in. The station was not pulling its weight. Most people have no clue the money it takes to run a station, especially the size of WRQQ, along with its sister stations in the cluster. People....Radio Stations are a damn business for heaven’s sake, not a sandbox playtoy!
You and I are in the working class target demo, we see what’s going on, and when something doesn’t work, you do research to find out why it won’t work and what it will take to fix it. You’re doing the right thing, keep it up.

To quote the legendary Cary Simpson...

"The smaller the town, the bigger the station."

Chris

Just read the article about WWON. Congratulations from small-town radio in Oz on what you're doing with small-town radio in the US. There should be more of it!
