A-Channel Morning show abruptly cancelled today in London

So basically the 11 pm evening news from the night before will be broadcast continuously from 6 to 9 am the next morning.

What a crock. How much further will this go?

'A' morning show axed; deep cuts at local station

Television station A London has been hit with a deep cut in staff today.

One source said close to 50 employees were given layoff notices this morning.

The station’s three-hour morning show aired for the last time today and within an hour employees learned they no longer have jobs.

“We knew things weren’t going well . . . but we didn’t expect this at all,” said Jeremy-John Dunton, a host of A Morning.

“The morning-show ratings are good. We expanded the show (from two to three hours last fall.)”

Morning-show employees are done immediately while some staff will remain on until Friday.

More are losing their jobs in August.

Employees remain in a state of shock, especially as only five days ago, owner CTV’s chief executive offer, suggested the company would try to hang in for the following year.

“We’re merely trying to keep the As open until regulatory restructuring for the entire sector can take place. While we welcome this new, year-long CRTC process and while we can't guarantee the survival of the As until that time, together we will do our best,” Ivan Fecan said on Friday.

Job cuts were also announced at the A stations in Ottawa and Barrie.

Ottawa was looking at the loss of 30 employees and the cancellation of its newscasts, except for the morning show.

In London, the morning show hours of 6 to 9 a.m. will be replaced with the re-broadcasting of the half-hour 11 p.m. newscast from the night before.

One employee was appalled that was happening.

“That’s awful. I don’t think anybody would have thought this would happen.”

Sportscaster Brent Lale, who will remain employed until the end of August, said he hopes the local community will rally in support of the station.

“We’re hoping people will fight for their local television station. Local television does matter. Pretty soon it may be extinct if something doesn’t get done about it.”
