A Christmas Ratings Kiss for 100.7 & 99.7 and more

with 92.9 and 94.5 both going all christmas. I wonder if this will really be a kiss in the ratings for star, wshh, bob, WKST and even k rock, dve and the x even the pickle and wjpa. only so many people want to hear all christmas. that audience has now been divided into two. so 94.5 won't get that christmas ratings kiss they got the past two years..they have to share it with ltj.
but if you like oldies...or rock or soft rock or a little of both. you are going to be punching around to find something you like even clarke at 620 and stan at 103.9. some of the best laid plans can go crazy.

Traditionally, there is a ratings spike for 3WS with the Christmas music. We buy on their station at this time because stores (especially those who are "run" by women) have 3WS on as background.

I must agree, three stations doing the Christmas format is bad. WLTJ and WSHH look like copycats, as 3WS is the original Chrismat music station.

I didn't know that 3WPMS was the "original" anything, I remember over 30 years ago a AM station was Christams music from Thanksgiving night to New Years night, Clear Channel wants us to believe that they are the "original" everything, gee how did radio survive without them?

as for the women only listen to 3WS in the stores. well I hate to burst that bubble I been in a dozen stores in the last 4 days and for the stores that had radio as their background music all I heard was Bob, which isn't orignal nor do they claim to be, well if they were owned by Clear Channel they would be "original".

Cutting through your sarcasm, if you're programming to the numbers, 3WS (who just so happens to be a Clear Channel station) focused on the women listeners. I never mentioned anything about Clear Channel taking the claim.(in your response-"Clear Channel wants us to believe they are the original everything. Gee how did radio survive without them?") I could really care less about Clear Channel. I merely stated that 3WS was the original station among the three playing holiday tunes at this time. I sense your sarcasm to Clear Channel and that's perhaps for a different thread. I don't care about them nor was focusing on their stronghold on radio (or lack of understanding what a real radio station is). Like I said, that's a different post for a different time.

Great! So there was another station way back when who had continuous Christmas music from Thanksgiving til New Years. 3WS effectively branded itself "Pittsburgh's Christmas music station". Of the three stations in town playing Christmas, they were first to do so and have more variety of songs. So, in that sense, yes, they are the original station (of today) playing Christmas music.

I think the Christmas format so soon and on all three stations is a bit overkill. It is NOT the way to go this year. People are already burned out. Perhaps that is why Bob was on in the stores you heard. So, hey, you weren't bursting my bubble. I was just letting you know of the reason our advertizing agency buys 3WS. That was the thinking behind it.

Let's face it, what was a good idea five years ago, is probably being proven right now as a bad idea today. Traditionally, a spike in numbers for whoever was the Christmas station. Let's see if we put our money to good use this year.

Re: PS

You also leave out the important wrinkle that 3WS existed long before Clear Channel Communications ever did. I know it feels like they've been around forever, but its only been like ten years since the Great Deregulation.

So, even IF 3WS DID lay claim to being the original Xmas music station, that would be a 3WS boast as opposed to a Clear Channel boast. Clear Channel just happens to own 3WS right now and that guy has beef with CC.

McCockiner-

Yes, thank you. That's what I was trying to convey. You crystalized my thinking on this. It is more of a 3WS boast than a Clear Channel.
