A couple of early evening catches near Chicago

Somewhat unusual, so I figured I'd post them here. All between 18:30 and 19:00 CDT.

For one, I snagged CBK 540 Watrous, SK (positive ID) by nulling the usually overpowering (in my area) WAUK Jackson, WI. WAUK is a mere 400 watts, but is also dead center directional toward my home listening post - so CBK is tough to catch from here. I'll bet it is even stronger later tonight.

Got KRVN 880 Lexington, NE strong and clear. Never picked it up from this area before. Splatter from the underachieving WLS was no match for a good signal from KRVN - and an unidentified music station was audible in the background. WCBS? Nowhere to be found, which is unusual from here. Also picked up a solid signal from KFAB 1110 Omaha, which is also unusual.

Last one of note (which may not be that unusual here, but I've never tried for it) is 1580 CKDO Oshawa, ON with a steady 3-4 of 10 signal here. Seems like tonight is a good night for propagation from the west, so there could be more interesting catches out there for my fellow dxers here in the midwest.

I'll bet you're right BRNout. I was hearing WCCO at 6:00 my time (5:00 central). Not bad considering the sunset is still around 6:45 in my area. Your Watrous and Lexington, NE makes sense. I bet there is some prop going on to the west tonight.

I'm turning the radio on right now to hear what I can get.

Great point! I also noticed that WCCO was pounding in here like a local, stronger than usual. Not sure if I'll be able to get back to the radio tonight, but will be interested to see if anyone else has some good ones to share.

So WOSU's HD, if in fact they are still running HD, was not a factor?

Not at all. WOSU barely comes into my area believe it or not. It's usually 820 from Chicago with whatever they're running this week.

This time of year, I turn the radio on in the 4:00 hour and can always hear WQEW, KYW, WPHT and WBZ already destroying Chicago and Detroit on 1030. WCCO and WHO, despite being a good 400-500 miles WEST of my location are always in the early skywave mix.

In Columbus those stations you mentioned from the East always are in early. If I remember correctly, WMVP usually is around by 4 p.m. if not earlier, well before it turns on the directional east pattern.
Does WOSU get up your way while it's on daytime pattern before DFW sunset? There have been a few times I've driven in western Ohio before sundown and WOSU is loud out there until it cuts to a highly directional pattern, by which time WBAP is ready and raring to go.

Can't speak for their night time coverage, but that one gets my vote for best daytime coverage...I've heard it 500 miles away in September at mid-day with an average car radio. Haven't heard it at night here In indiana yet.

CKDO is fairly regular in Northern Illinois. Not exactly a world-beater, but reasonably reliable and steady. 540 and 620 from Saskatchewan are usually also reliable here as well underneath their Milwaukee-area counterparts.

Couple this evening from Dayton OH. 990 with Bengals post game show, about 5:20pm. WJEH Gallipolis should have been off by then

Maybe you were picking up their mighty .016KW night time signal. I've heard it has been logged as far away as Point Pleasant & Rio Grande (Ohio, that is). :)

Also 610 about 5:30 ha! Preacher who preached ah like this ha! Very strong

I've heard that guy on various DX occasions ... no idea who he is and, unfortunately, I don't remember the station. I want to say it was 1530 WCKY overnight several years ago.

Now I remember where I heard it ... the 107.9 FM from the Huntington, West Virginia area! It used to interfere with Columbus' WODB down in the Lancaster area, and one time when I was driving to southern Ohio for work I caught this guy on the Huntington 107.9. I actually ended up listening for a few minutes, not because of his message but his cadence.
I want to say that was in November 2004.
I am wondering what 610 you heard?! Obviously WTVN was not present, and since you said it was at 5:30 p.m. WTVN must have disappeared with that impressive null toward Dayton. There is a religious station on 620 in Knoxville that can be heard very close to Columbus in WTVN's southern null ... I think I heard it driving home from the above trip.
