A day in the life of a lamptimer

Also of note was that Kay-Funn 1510 didn't do its wattage reduction
until 7:04-something. Maybe they had a "real important" spot to air
following the fake NBC News at 7, or perhaps they also were tuned
to the Lamptimer Lottery contest over on 1440 and just lost track
of time. ;)

Speaking of KFuNN at night...drive out to the parking lot of Lumberyard 14~Forty some evening about an hour after the drifting lamptimer sign-off. You'll hear 15~Ten out of Denver (Littleton to be exact) booming in right over the Mesa 100 watt wonder! And who knows, you may see a couple of Buckeye Boyz mooning the traffic along Thomas Rd.

So THAT'S what that was......I thought there had been an explosion on the grill at Denny's. You know....moon over my hammy!

Tuned in at 6:53 tonight (April 29) to hear the segue from jock talk
to stopset to ID to music JIP to TOH ID to music to carrier dump...
but there was music instead of jock talk. Did the show end early?

And I think the lamptimer may be s l o w i n g d o w n
juuuust a bit. My perception was that it gained only 10.5 seconds
(instead of :11) from last night. Oh well, the plug was pulled at
7:04:32--give or take half a second. ;D

Was there a real live jock on the air? Maybe the Cornut dust got into the lamptimer.

Or there is an SRP engineer with a sense of humor and is sending out 2.98 phases instead of the full 3.

Oldiesfan, yesterday the Lumberyard was providing metro Phoenix with 5,000 watts of thrilling ASU Sun Devil baseball action. When the post-game show ended (I believe it was around 6:38 P.M.) the Lumberyard went straight back to the Goldmine and started playing Simon and Garfunkel's "America" song already mid-way done. So there was no "Bandwagon" yesterday, just some ASU baseball with Tim Healey. I personally enjoyed not having the "Bandwagon" on because it provided me with some extra oldies at the end of the day. Sometimes that one song at 7:00 P.M. before Sandusky pulls the plug on the Goldmine is not enough! :)

BTW, ASU won 20-3 over the UA yesterday! That game must have been massive PPM ratings for the Lumberyard! ;D

Or maybe slightly south of 4000, if the power output meter on the "old Ampliphase"
(actually it's a Harris Gates Five) in one of the Lumberyard XMTR photos on KLL's
Phoenix Airchecks site is any indication. Still a lot better than 52 though! :D

I can confirm that with tonight's carrier dump at 7:04:42, the lamptimer is still
slowing--having gained only :10 in 24 hours. Perhaps its batteries need to be
replaced. Can someone send four new AAs over to the Lumberyard? Or does
it use a couple of nine-volts? ;D

And a reminder for those who are keeping score...Friday is a new month, and
May "daytime" for most, if not all, metro AMs, is 5:30am to 7:15pm.

Nurse Jeff and I anxiously await your May daytime report on the usual subjects: Lumberyard 14~Forty; KFuNN 15~Ten, and ColonBlow 11~hundred. Anyone care to speculate on the next AM to go silent?

The Mickey Mouse Outfit owns (or do they lease?) a nice piece of land near the Loop 202 and Country Club Dr. I wonder if some developer would offer them a nice chunk of change to take 1580 dark? It would certainly be a good spot for a nice new spring-training home for the Cubs and/or Diamondbacks, for example.

Evening dumps 'n' drops for Friday May 1 (7:15pm target):

KPHX 1480 was already on night power at 7:08. It usually takes
them a few days to realize it's a new month.

KFNN 1510 reduced power at 7:14:51.

KDUS 1060 and KFNX 1100 were on night facilities when checked
during the 7:15 minute.

Which brings us to KAZG 1440, where the carrier dump was at
7:19:53, sans legal ID. Comparing tonight's 4:53 past the specified
time vs. last night's 4:42 past can only mean one thing--our fave
lamptimer is back to an :11 per day gain! Someone must have
read our plea for new batteries and sent them to the Lumberyard. ;)

Still gaining :11 every day.

Last night, In The Still Of The Night was in progress when it was stilled--
in the night--by the lamptimer at 7:20:15.

Tonight, a song faded, followed by a jingle (not a legal ID, just a "regular"
KAZG jingle), and then "Help"--just the first note of Help, then static at
7:20:26.

Another sports talk program is now airing on Lumberyard 1440--
7-10am weekdays according to what was said at the end of the
show. I'm not too sure of the show's title, but from what I can
dig up on the internet, I think it's another refugee from KXAM.

Must have been on "live assist" at the end, as the closing theme
was crossfaded back to the "Gold Mine in progress" (hard drive,
sat feed, or wherever it originates) at 10:00:15. They didn't miss
the TOH ID, however--it aired from the automation at 10:02:25.

BTW, as of last evening, lamptimer sign-off was 6:32 late, and I
did hear sign-on a couple days ago (Saturday?) and it was also
the same 6+ minutes late.

That Gumpdusky Goldmine might be petering out over at Lumberyard 14~Forty. Sure makes a lot more sense to sell sports on both 10~Sixty and 14~Forty, than paying those miners to dig more nuggets. Enjoy it while it lasts...and be sure to check out the new galvanized nails at Ponderosa Lumber while you're there!

Would it be The Pollyana Positive Side of Sports? IIRC, that was KXAM's morning-drive show. I'm at work at 7 AM so I can't check it out.

Sound like Gumpdusky's taking over a good portion of the late KXAM's talk lineup. Refresh my memory, but didn't KXAM get most of then-KUKQ's talk shows when 1060 switched to sports back in '97? If so, we've come almost full-circle - Gump-to-Gerson-to-Gump. ;D

Those shows really made a difference on 13~Ten....did so well the station is dark now  However Nurse Jeff and I recall something a KX-AMer said a while back about the cooking show NOT being a brokered program. Perhaps the Gersons were paying for all those local programs instead of charging. YIKES! We suspect Gumpdusky is getting paid for airtime on Lumberyard 14~Forty. Mr East Valley Radio Network (aka RadioIsCrack) would probably know.

Yes, there is money changing hands at KAZG-AM....that's how my show was produced....I don't know if Chuck is selling the time or revenue sharing, but personally, I think it's great that there is a broadcaster that allows talk on his air that is locally produced and to a greater or lesser degree reflects what is going on in the market outside of endless political diatribes of one stripe or another.

In my last meeting with Chuck, I suggested he take on left-wing radio....it always did a small, but measurable audience, which is a hell of a lot more than can be said for KXAM, KFNX and others on the AM dial. He demurred. Before I brought back East Valley Radio, I pitched him on turning KAZG into an all East Valley station, complete with call letter change (KXEV)....I had hoped to have a 6a-6pm live lineup and had extremely cursory conversations with Charles Goyette to do mornings, Jeffry O'Brien to do middays and I would have done afternoon drive. Chuck, who liked the idea a lot, also was prescient about the market and economy and at that time did not feel he wanted to rev up the costs of starting a new station if he was not going to go balls to the wall to make it work. He felt like it would take $500,000 to a million to get a foothold in the market and that was a tad rich for his blood just then. So, I went on to lose MY money instead of his....although he has a lot more than me by far.

I know he has detractors, but Chuck Artigue is a flipping radio-station running genius....his stations make so much more dough than anything else in the market with NO debt service. I'd like to think he's a fair judge of talent, because he has always been more than fair with me, and it ain't because I'm such a nice guy. When he believes in somebody, he gets behind them.

Rusty VANS!?!?!?!?!?

Those are mobile transmitters (and emergency generators keeping the lamptimer alive during the monsoon season).

What's going on at the Lumberyard?

Monday at 7:22:00 it was dead air carrier prior to the lamptimer
shutting it down at 7:22:59.

Tuesday I heard dead air carrier continuously from 7:12:00 until the
"Gumpdusky sign off" (I wonder if they have it trademarked? ;D) at
7:23:10.

This evening (Wednesday), I turned on KAZG at 7:06:00 and heard
the audio feed of TNT cable with an NBA game. ??? This lasted until
7:15:15 when they cut back to the usual oldies music programming
(in progress). The lamptimer then did its thing--but forgot the legal ID
of course--by cutting the carrier at 7:23:21. Note the :11 daily drift
of our fave lamptimer is still in place.

Psst, Gumpdusky...May sign-off is supposed to be 7:15!
