A day in the life of a lamptimer

If I can borrow one of Akbar's phrases (although I think he "borrowed" it
from Blazing Saddles ;))--what in the wide, wide world of sports is going
on at Lumberyard 1440?

Tonight as of 7:01, the audio from ESPN (TV, not ESPN Radio) was being
aired--an NBA game, as with TNT last night.

At approx. 7:21:15 (well after KAZG should have signed off) there was a
cold switch to the music automation.

The lamptimer dumped the carrier at 7:23:32, :11 later than last night.

What you heard at the very end was not a legal ID (of course not!) but
a "fourteen forty, KAZG" jingle, followed by the first note of Summer In
The City
, then static.

What we all want to know is...well, maybe just me and a few other local
radio geeks...does Gumpdusky have the rights to broadcast the audio of
these two cable networks? I need to remember to tune in no later than
6:50 to find out if this is explained at the end of the jock talk show.

Why are they even bothering to carry these Conference Finals matchups if they have to sign off before the games end? The *earliest* these games will conclude each evening is 8:00 (for the Orlando/Cleveland series on TNT) or 8:30 (for most of the Denver/LA series on ESPN/ABC)...and most go at least 20 minutes longer than scheduled.

Saturday's Game 3 between Denver & LA will be ABC (instead of ESPN) - I wonder if that makes any difference as far as whether 1440 will simulcast the audio.

Sounds like someone bungled the patch panel.

....or the paperclip holding things together rusted out! Judging by the pix on KOOL Lauren's web page, Lumberyard 14~Forty could use a couple cases of Rustoleum!

I found a good use for KXAM and the Lumberyard after hours.. Automated TIME & TEMP!

"This hour's time and temperature in Scottsdale is brought to you by

The guys in Buckeye Media Hut...

The time is...8:47 pm and the temperature is...101 degrees."

Doc, don't you often spray that on the underside of the Gremlin? ;D

More jock-ularity Tuesday evening at the Lumberyard. While I didn't hear how or
when the 4-7pm talk show ended, there was NBA game audio from TNT on the air
again at 7:02, but by 7:06 it was back to the automated music hard drive/satellite
feed/whatever, then a getting waaay late dump the carrier sign off at 7:24:26.

Actually we've been using hot tar the past couple of years....masks the aroma those day old burritos Nurse Jeff picks up at the Buckeye Circle K!

We're getting a little concerned that this topic is approaching the 10,000 hits mark. Only Jim Sharpe is worthy of such a feat...not some dinky Scottsdale daytimer!

I was hoping someone would report on when the lamptimer did its thing this morning, being the first of a new month. I woke up about 5:24, and decided to check in on Imus on KFNX. Dead Air! So I tried KAZG, Dead Air also, although I could have pushed the wrong button. Back to KFNX, still dead air. About 5:25 I tried KAZG again and they were playing oldies. As I say, I could have pushed the wrong button the first time, after all, I had only been awake about a minute.

I'm just curious to know if they remembered to reset the lamptimer for the new month. I wonder what they will do tonight at 7:45..................?

The Lumberyard's drifting lamptimer finished May by signing off 10:21 late (7:25:21)
last night, still maintaining its :11 daily gain.

New month, new daytime parameters of 5:15am to 7:45pm.

Tonight's "dump the carrier" sign-off was at 7:55:32, so Gumpdusky adjusted the
on/off times for June but didn't fix the drift from real time as there is still the :11
gain and KAZG is now 10:32 late with sign off. And no legal ID of course. ::)

pberger's notes from this morning seem to be dead on, as KAZG would have popped
on sometime during the 5:25 minute, based on what occurred this evening.

Tonight, for the first time in month's I remembered to catch the sign-off. I tuned in about 7:35, maybe a little earlier, and got dead air! I was expecting 20 minutes of music, but nada. I think the carrier was still on, as it was quieter than adjacent frequencies. Now the big question, what will happen in the morning?

Gumpdusky's had a problem segueing from live jock talk to the music
automation. A couple of evenings recently there was 1:00-1:30 of
dead air following the stopset/ID which usually runs to about 7:00:10.

Tonight however was "Lumberyardo bizarro." I didn't get KAZG turned on
until just after 7:00:10 and they were already in dead air, so I assume the
ID had just finished and the usual patch cord pulling was going on.

As pberger hinted above, it was dead air--but not just a minute or two--
it was dead air all the way until the lamptimer killed the carrier at (now
don't get ahead of me here ;)) :11 later than last night, or 7:55:43.
(June sign-off is--ahem--7:45pm!)

I wonder if since a legal ID was the last thing apparently heard prior
to the 55+ minutes of (carrier on) dead air, will KAZG get credit for a
properly-executed sign-off tonight? ;D

And during those 55 minutes they could have looped My Way 12 times. :D

Nurse Jeff and I can't figure out What In The Wide, Wide World of Sports is a goin' on at Lumberyard 14~Forty with their constantly drifting lamptimer and inability to seque from Sports Parkinglot Programming to Goldmine music. So we thought we'd check sister station KSLX's web page for some answers to the daytimer's dilemas. And guess what happens when you query KAZG or Lumberyard 14~Forty? http://www.kslx.com/KeywordSearch.asp?search=1&keyword=Lumberyard+14~Forty Thanks for nothin', Gumpdusky...now we're not even sure the Goldmine is located under the Circle K at 44th St & Camelback!

Subtitle this one "and the dead air just keeps on coming!" or "does anyone
at Gumpdusky even listen to Lumberyard 1440?"

KAZG's carrier popped on 5:25:47am. So we know the lamptimer is still in
its usual drift mode. And I say "carrier popped on" as that's all its been--
dead air carrier continuously for one hour. No programming, no legal ID at
sign-on (now you didn't expect that, did you?), no legal ID anywhere near
the TOH at 6:00.

$750,000 plus the real estate and leases for everything strapped on the Tower of Pow-Pow-Power. And not a dime more!

K A N J (Akbar 'n Jeff, of course) 14~Forty....All Middle Eastern Men of the Media, All The Time* *assuming we can get the current xmttr to power down to 52 watts! ???

Follow-up on "how I played fast and loose with my AM station
license this morning" by G. Ump Dusky...

After almost 1:25 of dead air since sign-on, actual programming
finally came on at 6:50:15, with a positioner, a jingle (neither of
which contained a legal ID), and music.

At 7:00:08 there was a clean segue (how did they manage that?)
from a song fade to the jock talk show open, however they failed
(again) to run a legal ID.

It would be interesting to see the entries on the KAZG program log
for this morning...or do stations even need to keep a log anymore?
(I'd hate to be the one to have to sign my name to it! ;))

May I suggest that you say a novena to the patron saint of radio and radio workers--St. Gabriel the Archangel--and light a candle for KAZG. Pray that they can give the proper legal id at sign on and sign off. Just be sure not to drip any wax on the control panel or lamptimer, for heaven's sake!!!

If all else fails, buy a label maker, print out the legal id for KAZG, affix it to your radio and look at it at the top of each and every hour you listen. That should solve the problem. ;D

Maybe Frank Kalil would donate the rights to his old KTKT intro (which goes something like "Across the burning sands.....". "One Hump or Two?"

I'll go half with you on the place if you can get it for that price!

Tonight, following the 4-7pm jock talk and ending stopset...

7:00:02 legal ID
7:00:06 dead air (for 13 minutes)
7:13:22 music JIP
7:55:54 lamptimer cuts carrier in mid-song, aka sign-off
